The problem was caused by, or at very least made much worse because of, DOGE.
The return of screwworm comes after the Musk-led Department of Government Efficiency, launched by the Trump administration, last year cut funding for a project dedicated to monitoring and containing New World screwworm in Central America. The funding was axed days before the U.S. ended a temporary suspension of cattle imports from Mexico, meaning livestock was allowed to cross the border without any of the monitoring previously funded by the U.S. Agency of International Development (USAID). Agriculture officials and cattle industry leaders raised alarm about the cuts at the time and, for the last several months, pleaded with the government to step in as they monitored screwworm infections moving north through Mexico—but they were ignored

Yep, unintended consequences are still consequences. Why don't we send people experienced with this exact problem? Oh, wait, they were all fired. Whoops.

I guess it's unintended but what do you expect if you fire the people preventing its spread and cancel funding for the programs?

These people were defending our country from a flesh eating parasite. Our own government called it waste and fraud.

Rich cattle barons can pay for their own pest protection.

Silly me thought democrats wee against cattle but I guess they just want to whine about everything.

"Our own government" is now mainly concerned with shooting us all in the foot.
