I brought this up in this forum before, but I thought he deserved a thread and since I misspelled his name I can correct that with this thread.

I found out about this from Iran's presstv website where his last name was not spelled correctly. Aside from that, their info about him was very accurate.
Our government is criminal and Dan Hale should not be in prison. Wikipedia has this on their link:
"In August 2021 he received the Sam Adams Award for Integrity in Intelligence, eponymously named for a Vietnam War-era whistleblower, for "performing a vital public service at great personal cost—imprisonment for truth-telling".[14][15] Later that month, U.S. Representative Ilhan Omar (D-MN) wrote to President Biden requesting a full pardon or commutation of sentence for Hale."
Writing Biden to ask that Hale be pardoned cannot hurt. Not that I expect Biden to care, but at least post about Hale on social media and ask others with more time on their hands to write their congressmen and POTUS to raise a stink about it. Hale is a hero. Heroes should be rewarded, not punished.

As I wrote in an earlier post, I don't think Daniel Hale belongs in jail, but he pled guilty to espionage and was sentenced to 48 months in prison. This was pretty light sentence, and I predict he'll be out in less than 3 years. Sorry, but our justice system includes sentencing guidelines, and doesn't reward people for pleading guilty to crimes.

Yes, he did have a choice. No one held a gun to Mr. Hale's's head and forced him to leak classified information to the press. I'm sure his intentions were honorable, but a crime is a crime. He'll do his time, and be released. Perhaps next time around he'll get a lawyer and obtain this information legally through the freedom of information act, and spare himself criminal charges.
@mchill saidI’m pretty sure this is the kind of stuff that isn’t available to FOI requests. You have to wonder how dark a governments secrets have to be before reasonable people demand protection for the whistleblowers.

It sounds as though he’s in jail for damaging the government politically rather than the country strategically.
If someone leaks information that is life threatening to security operatives or assets then that’s another matter IMO.

I agree, but the legal line has to be drawn somewhere. There is a great deal of classified information I'd love to have access to, but we have to face the fact that (on occasion) information is classified for a very good reason; stealing it and leaking it to the press, just because we feel strongly about it is not the answer.
@mchill saidThere is a good reason, to cover up civilian murdering. That is why it is classified.

"just because we feel strongly about it is not the answer."
Then what is the answer?
What do you feel strongly about? Condoning murder?
What should he have done instead?
@metal-brain saidDear Joe - You have no idea why this information was classified and no idea who authorized it. Your statement makes no sense.

Regarding your question of "what should he have done instead?" I repeat - He should have gotten a lawyer and at least tried to obtain this information legally through the freedom of information act. Maybe he would be successful, maybe not, but he made no attempt. He simply leaked it to the press. That sir, is a crime.
I'm fully aware your knee jerk reaction is to paint the big, bad government as the boogie man here, but we can't simply release classified information whenever we feel like it. This information is released on a need to know basis, such as our elected officials who use it to make legal and foreign policy decisions.

You already acknowledged that wouldn't happen.

Even if it saves hundreds of innocent lives including young children? So he had the choice of trying to save lives or letting them die in secret. I thought that innocent civilian lives mattered. That is your whole rational for getting people vaccinated, but it doesn't apply to foreign civilian children including baby girls.
So keep secret the murdering of young children so it can continue. Is that ethical?
Hale deserves to be in prison for caring and trying to save lives? Hale exposed the real criminals killing children and you condone him being treated like a criminal.
You are unethical. You care more about partisan bias than innocent human lives. That is like covering up mob assassinations where innocent children were inconveniently in the way, but the assassination is priority. Gotta have priorities.
@mchill saidI definitely agree that there are secrets ( some of them very dark ) that need to be kept for good reason. It just bothers me when it’s not clear cut.

Say a government keeps the body count regarding collateral damage due to drone strikes secret for the purposes of maintaining the acquiescence of the electorate regarding the policy. Is that ok? Shouldn’t members of a democracy be given the ugly truth so that they can support or condemn the policy at the ballot box?
@metal-brain saidDear Mr. Metalbrain - You have no idea why this information was classified, so to suggest it was classified just because it contained data on killing innocent civilians makes no sense whatsoever.
Killing innocent civilians needs to be classified?
Yes, murderers like to keep their killings secret. It is unethical to condone the systematic killing of children being classified and putting the whistleblower in prison. If anyone condones that they are evil.
You're not getting the big picture here, are you? It's time for you to grow up and understand that governments keep secrets. In America, stealing those secrets and leaking them to the press (no matter how honorable one's intentions) is a crime.
Put on your big boy pants and deal with it! 😢
@mchill saidIt was classified just because it contained data on killing innocent civilians. It makes sense. There is no other reason. They have a history of abusing the espionage act and there is a pattern of abuse for no other reason than to cover up their crimes.

They all exposed war crimes. You need to put on your big boy pants and deal with the truth. Our heroes are being punished for doing the right thing.
We know biden is doing the same thing obama was. He killed 10 civilians in a drone strike. One of them was a 2 year old girl. Does your partisan bias let you see how horrible that is? Do you need to see pictures of her body......or what is left of it?

You are the main reason the world is a dangerous place to live. You don't do anything about it. In fact, you are worse than that. You make excuses for killing little girls. You might as well be helping them.
I can't believe sociopaths like you can sleep at night. You are SICK!

- and GW Bush lied about weapons of mass destruction in Iraq in order to justify an unnecessary invasion that cost many thousands of American soldiers and many more innocent Iraq citizens their lives. Then had most of the intel documenting his lies, as well as his illegal torture campaign classified also. Lots of dirty little secrets are classified in the name of national security. So, what do you plan to do about it? Overthrow the government? Have the proud boys invade the capital again? We don't live in a perfect world cupcake. Stop sniveling.
