After Danny Glover recently came out and blamed the earthquake on global warming and Pat Robertson blamed it on a pact with the devil, who are we to believe? I mean, its not like they both can be wrong....right?

Don't feel bad, man! You're still way ahead of both of them.

danny glover is obviously too stupid to understand the causes of earthquakes, as for pat robertson he is just crazy.

I don't think it is either. I think what you are seeing is the result of ones beliefs shaping their own personal reality. In the case of Danny, he believes that global warming is destroying the earth and Pat believes in a devil trying to do the same. You see we all have out "devils" and we usually try to link castrophe to what we believe are sources that are destroying us. We all do it. That is why ones beliefs are so important. In fact, you might argue that your beliefs are more important that the facts because you interpret the facts through the lens of your beleif system.

Our beliefs are an important factor in shaping the way we interpret physical evidence, albeit for some more so than others. That's why it is critical to listen to a wide variety of perspectives. While no single one may convince you entirely, each may still shape and temper your beliefs, so that your interpretation of data is less biased by your own direct experience and is perhaps then more objective.

You couldn't ask for a a better explanation of "truthiness", or a better illustration of why we're all going to hell in a hand-basket. Take heart, however, when you're living in a lean-to scratching subsistence from the earth with your bare-hands facts will mean a hell of a lot more than opinions.
