It's clear the US is following the path of the Roman empire it seems.
Now China is filing more patents than the US, formerly #1 in the world in that area.
One pin down. How many more to go?
None, the US is finished as a world power. England lost it's predominance over the world 100 years ago, now America is doing the same. It appears that China will fill the gap.
I hope the planet is happy with the outcome.

Your evidence that it's "clear the US is following the path of the Roman empire" is that a country with 5 times the US population finally passed us in raw number patent applications?
Get a grip, dude.

I call that adding insult to injury.
And it doesn't matter if the country is Canada with 1/10th the population, a patent is a patent and we are now in second place. The patents are ideas, if you hadn't noticed, and if you fall behind in the idea department.....

The nation concept is not historically necessary. Other ways of aggregating and organizing power are possible. There are other examples of how the role of the nation is eroding, such as the rise of NGOs and of extra-national terrorist groups.
A related development is the diminished value of territorial barriers, mainly separation and isolation, as a way to defend against attack. The nation has historically depended on having a defined territory and subject population. The US benefited from not sharing borders with enemies and we saw in WWII the benefit of being out of range of bombers. The current ability to project destructive force across great distances, and more recently, electronically, means that the dependence of nations on their territory is less secure. This would make people want to turn to another way to organize for mutual protection.

Originally posted by sonhouseThat US universities lead the world is a good thing, not "insult" or "injury." First, many of them will stay and work here. Second, those that study here will give our students the benefit of a more diversified education and contribute their ideas to our universities. Finally, those that do go home will bring some American culture and American ideas home with them, which increases American cultural, academic and political influence abroad.
