University of Florida eliminates DEI office to comply with state regulations
[...]
In January, Florida’s Board of Governors voted to ban state spending on all diversity, equity and inclusion programs, in an effort to comply with legislation Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed in May 2023 that defunded DEI programs at state universities and colleges.
Gov. DeSantis had called DEI programs a “distraction from the core mission” of public universities, CNN previously reported.

@wildgrass saidwork...? what are they supposed to do? I had no idea that DEI on campus was purposed.

imagine that 🙂
@earl-of-trumps saidI too would like to know what they do, I have just put down some primers on BLM and LGBTQQTRANS and would like to see mainly if a white christian, who lives in a bubble of culture, with locked doors, would qualify

The interesting thing about DEI is that the people vocally opposing it are generally sexist, racist and anti-trans (read: alt-right snowflakes). So, it’s very hard to judge their arguments on the issue.
My biggest problem with it is the white male privilage part of it. I’m pretty sure white privilage is a thing in certain areas of society, but if your parents weren’t university educated and you grow up in a tough neighbourhood, get a low paid job and are unable to afford decent housing, I don’t actually see what sort of privilage folks are talking about.
Well, and there is a second issue: equal rights for everyone: I totally agree. Certainly equal oppertunities. Absolutely.
However, you can’t have blind people driving busses.
So there has to be some boundary of rationality as well.
@shavixmir saidthe people promoting dei are racist, sexist and mentally unstable

fixed it for you
@mott-the-hoople saidYou just can’t handle the truth.

@mott-the-hoople saidSo you'd rather have good ol' white racism, yeah?
you misspelled liberal racism
This is what getting rid of DEI does. It allows whites, who were blindsided by the Civil Rights Act, to just continue disenfranchising everyone not like them, just like they've always done. Only now they don't have to hide it.
@shavixmir saidWell, for one thing, white privilege means you don't have to be in fear for your life if you get pulled over by the cops.

@mott-the-hoople saidNo one with a shred of decency believes this.

@shavixmir saidAnd there's probably very little actual racism overall there as well.
I’m pretty sure, here in the Netherlands, nobody needs to fear for their lives if they’re pulled over by the cops.
But I'm talking about 'Murica, home of the NRA and slavery.
I just get damned tired of seeing white Karens telling some latina to "Go back where you came from!"
@shavixmir saidDon't you know, "equal" is out the window. It is now "equity"

Businesses like Microsoft can pay a person of color more money than the white person doing the same work and call it "equitable".
so "equal work, equal pay" is out the window, now.
