Democrats became authoritarians. They thought they had to censor the orange bogeyman so they turned against freedom of speech. Free speech is as American as apple pie, but they convinced themselves the orange man was a fascist and they had to fight fascism with fascism.
It all seemed normal to support something as unpopular as free speech. Nobody in their group was there that would point out they supported a minority opinion. That would only happen if someone like me was in the group and they would not allow that.
Group think is a form of self delusion. They convinced themselves censorship was normal in a free society. Every lie they believed had to be protected. The truth became unbearable to them and every group member reinforced their flawed belief that the truth was a lie and it had to be fought at every turn.
They fooled themselves into thinking authoritarianism was popular because democracy was threatened by the orange bogeyman and anyone that said otherwise was stupid. After all, everyone in their group said so. They hurt their own party because of group think. They didn't realize most people thought they were being like Nazis. And even if they were told that the person that told them would instantly become stupid.
You cannot tell people they are being like evil people. Nobody thinks of themselves as evil, even evil people. They always rationalize what they are doing. They only want to kill you to save the planet from global warming. If you want to make an omelet you have to break some eggs. Like that.

A black person is literally afraid to drive down the road for fear of a white cop just ASSUMING because the driver is black he MUST be committing a crime OR has a stash of weapons in his car on the way to a robbery.
Don't take that as me pointing out one aspect of racism, that is JUST an example among HUNDREDS more.
Like discrimination in housing, where blacks can't buy a house in some places because whitey doesn't WANT blacks there.
I could go on and on but racism is endemic in our society and some folks recognize that and try to compensate for the lack of hiring of blacks and browns even though that person might even be MORE qualified for the job.
This is NOT about replacing a white person who has higher qualifications with a black of lesser qualifications, that is the EXCUSE whitey uses when confronted with that BULLShHIIT.
