With the GOP soon to take over the Whitehouse and quite possibly all of Congress, the Democratic blame game will soon begin, so let me volunteer some thoughts for my fellow Democrats:
* Do Not blame Republicans for this. This election (like the one in 2020) was free and fair. Don't put yourself on Trump's level and start sniveling about stolen elections, because it just wasn't so.
* With Trump's popular vote total a scant 7 million over Harris, you can blame the Harris campaign's inability to tap into those 20+ million registered voters who never bothered to cast a ballot.
Those are 2 bitter pills to swallow, but there is a silver lining: Trump's policies are rub a lot of his own voters the wrong way, and his honeymoon period will fade pretty fast. One lost election is not the end of all. You'll have your day again. In the meantime, hunker down and weather it. As CCR once said:

"I see trouble on the way"

In 2024, much of that "improved" turnout returned for the Republicans, but not for the Dems.
So did Republican legislatures literally make it harder for Dems to vote? I don't think so. Here in NC, we have an irritatingly conservative state congress, but I was able to vote early with ease; and then on election day, the polls were empty - no waiting.
Dems just didn't want it bad enough. Which is a typical phenomenon - if "your guy" is out then you are more desperate to "get back in."

Here is the answer - Failure to understand human nature.
People are wary of voting into the highest position in a superpower country, a woman, a half-breed [no part of her is white], with no track record of successes, who was a failure a speaking clearly her policies which will improve the country, who just rode in the apparent failure of Joe Biden as a president.
The woman just was not president material. People were saying that all along. Plus liberals come off as being sexual perverts.

Candidates like Sherrod Brown, John Tester and maybe Casey in PA losing as well as the Republicans likely holding the House make this something besides a personal repudiation of Harris though something less than Earl's imagined "red wave".

The Republican Party has become the party of immature, beer-swilling workers, fearful whites, dependent women AND (oddly) billionaires.
There are slightly more people in the second group.
Here is the message I am hearing: "Dems need to get off their high horse. They need to start praising straight white maleness. Like it or not, straight white men are a BIG group. And they determine the outcome of elections. Straight white men are secretly fearful in a lot of ways, and they have gotten awfully tired of not being seen. For years, they have been passed over in the name of women's rights and black rights and gay rights and snail darter 'rights'; called 'toxic' for their masculinity; had things like Boy Scouts stripped away from them, etc. etc. etc. They don't like to talk about it - but they are quite frankly fed up."
