Ordinarily the answer to that question would be "no", but in this case he already acknowledged he lied. Of course he had no real option here since to tell the truth would be to reveal a classified program, in which case he would have needed to book a flight to Hong Kong.

It is illegal to lie to Congress as well and Congress is aware of classified programs like this one. Congress did vote for this classified program right?

Why didn't Clapper do the same thing as Holder did and say he couldn't answer that until Congress held a closed session?

I presume he felt that if he said "no comment" it would be an implicit acknowledgement of the existence of the programme. Why else would he refuse comment, after all?

Why should we not know the program exists? They keep secrets from us but we can't even know they monitor us? If we want privacy we are called traitors and thrown in prison, if we want to monitor government we are called traitors again.

Government hypocrites!

Apparently, that's what the electorate wanted, although I suppose Kerry would've kept the Patriot Act too.

Not a very bright question, as Clapper already said he was less than truthful, i.e. he lied.

As I have pointed out in several threads, NSA has been collecting electronic data well before the Patriot Act, or this recent scandal. Echelon began shortly after the Oklahoma city bombing, and Echelon scanned all electronic communications for key words, or in computer lingo "strings".

I can't imagine why Clapper would deny something that everyone ought to know the government does. Oh yeh, the short memory and attention span of the low information voter.

I thought he got VD from a toilet seat. Maybe it was Crapper. Crapper, Clapper whatever, he didn't need to lie about it.
