One of the simple questions which should be answered in this busy world.
Does anyone watch him read off of a piece of paper that he is going to do this? Does anyone agree with this? Do you know someone who has never been to college who will be assessed money to pay off a person's debts? His graduate school college loans?

In which world is 50.000 a year just to study normal? And so students are forced to take on loans with absurd interest rates. That’s fukked up too.
You do realise that society (a country) needs engineers, psychologists, doctors, teachers, mathematicians, geo-physisits, people who can spell, etc. ?

Goobermint subsidizes all kinds of economic activities. This is just another example. For some reason it bugs you.

@averagejoe1 saidHow are these people who didn't go to college making so much money that they are getting taxed more than the college graduates themselves?

“The Georgetown analysis projects that, under Clinton’s plan, so many people in the United States would apply to go to top public universities that those would become much more selective, shutting out poor and nonwhite students, who would land in already overburdened open-access regional public universities and community colleges with low success rates.
In Germany, the shift to dependence on government funding, combined with the increase in enrollment that resulted from abandoning tuition, has also meant a 10 percent decline in spending per student in the last few years, the OECD reports, to about $16,895, compared to $27,924 in the United States. Starved for funding, German universities are seldom near the top of international rankings.”

@shavixmir saidTo me, it is not normal.

When I started at Purdue (public; in-state rates) in 1981, the cost was ~$3000/year all in. That's about $10,600 adjusted to today. But Purdue in 2023-24 costs $20,022 per year all-in. (I think I paid ~$15k/yr for my kids where they went.)
So that's roughly double what it should be. The difference is due to demand - both within the US and worldwide. Everybody wants to go to US colleges. And why not? They are delightful.
But government increased demand by offering loans. And now bailing out students will further increase demand because it takes away risk.
This will drive further inflation. Can't use gasoline to put out fires.
I went to graduate school for essentially nothing because I worked in the medical school and the stipend offset my remitted tuition and housing. That also seems normal because it's what happened to me.

@mott-the-hoople saidWoessmann, the economist, agreed that, “as a general rule, universities in Germany do have much less resources than at least the higher-level universities in the U.S. University presidents in general will always tell you they don’t have enough money, but in general I think they have a point there. If the universities were able to [impose] tuition fees, that would surely in general affect the quality.”
