I will leave it to you to determine its meaning.
All kidding aside, I think cats can and do like people. Unlike dogs who have a "group mentality" rooted deep in their DNA, a cat can be part of a clowder or a loner. I think they choose to be with us, unlike the dog who is driven to be part of a group and we become part of his/her pack. Save for lions and in a limited sense cheetahs, almost all other members of the cat family live solitary lives. Do the Love us, like us or just put up with us for mutual good, who knows. I for one think they love us in their own way but not our way.
Define love.
Cats are not needy in the way dogs are. Cats walk by themselves, can mostly survive without human assistance, and would not choose to be around us simply for food. Cats have found a symbiotic relationship with their humans, they will make their humans happy, they will accept gifts from their humans, but it's a marriage of free will on both sides.
