... have rights other than those we grant ourselves?
Are "human rights" written in stone somewhere to be discovered or do we make them up as we go along?
Is the concept of "human rights" self-serving or altruistic?

Life, death, cellular replication, reproduction, blah, blah, blah.
Regardless of what we think, these are accidents of existence, allied to the wonderful gift of just being here now.
What we codify as "rights", across our various cultures, say more about our sociocultural beliefs than any inherent premise, promise, obligation or reward.

I'm just trying to see what people think about this.
Those "rights" are unalienable .. you could look it up.
It's true, we grant these rights to ourselves.

The real truth is .. you only get to keep those "rights" you're able and willing to defend.

Majority rules, strength of arguement by a learned body or some other criteria?

The one thing what seperates mankind from the animals is to look for older or weaker individuals of our species.
We ARE animals. I wish people would stop trying to seperate us from them. There is no us and them.
As for human rights, we have the right to mind our own business without being molested/killed/threatened/eaten, etc, as long as we do not impose on those same rights of someone else. Once we start to assume our own rights are more important than someone elses, we lose those rights.
It's a balance between rights and responsibilities.
