Frankly, I'm not sure we do anymore. A special counsel spends an enormous and money investigating the Trump campaign, and returns with a 400+ page report heavy on legal jargon, and light on clarity, then Robert Mueller does little more than whimper when Bill Barr keeps the report under wraps while he spins a narrative on it very friendly to President Trump. Result: Nothing
On the emoluments side: When President Trump visits his clubs Republicans pay him millions to be where he is. Trump Organization overcharges the Secret Service for the use of its cottage properties. At Trump’s Bedminster, New Jersey, golf club, the Secret Service paid $17,000 a month for a three-bedroom cottage. These are just a few of the dozens of direct violations of the "so called" emoluments clause. Result: Appeals court tosses 1 emoluments case, and has yet to rule on anything else.
* The House of Representatives issues subpoenas for records and witnesses and documents in it's impeachment inquiry, and the Trump administration tells the House to go to hell. Result: Not a damn thing!
President Trump on national TV publicly invites People Republic of China to investigate one of his political rivals, directly undermining the very democratic process America was founded on. Result: Not a damn thing.
Now - - Before folks like No1maruder and SH76 get hopelessly lost in the legal weeds, specific cases, punctuation etc. let's step back and look at the BIG picture here. Has anything of substance been done about any of this? The short answer is NO! America's system of checks and balances has proven to be so weak, and so riddled with loopholes, that a corrupt President can pretty much do as he pleases. While a small army of lawyers chatter in court and file their legal briefs, this corrupt President is still doing as he pleases, and I'll wager, no matter what the outcome of the 2020 election is, Donald J Trump can continue launder Russian syndicate money through his organization, keep his ill gotten gains as a result of being President, and say "F--K YOU" to the American people, with little more than a monetary fine, and a clause specifying he's not admitting guilt.
-So much for our system of "checks and balances!" 🙄

I had to take a deep breath after that last sentence: Not because it ran-on; but because it's all so painfully true.
There's currently, a sad state of affairs, in the country that I love. The country that I've defended and the country that I'll have no shame in defending. The country of my birth and inevitably, the country of my death.
The post that was quoted here has been removedQ: Why are so many Americans afraid of expressing what they believe are true criticisms of the USA?
A: The same reason many Russian or Chinese citizens are afraid of expressing what they believe are true criticisms of their home countries. One's home country is where they live, work, and raise their families. Without their country, where would they be? Where would they go? How would they live? All countries have flaws, but getting too radical against one's home country is much like shooting themselves in the foot.
@mchill saidWithout getting into the weeds and without commenting on whether Trump has achieved "ill gotten gains as a result of being President," I will say that fundamentally, I agree with you that checks on the executive branch have been slowly eroded to the point that they are now very weak.

@sh76 saidThat's because you have wisdom beyond your years! 🙂

@earl-of-trumps saidAre you accusing Democrats of doing the same thing that Republicans did to President Obama? You know, when their only goal was to make him a one-term President by blocking ever move he made? You don't say?
Mchill, your idea of "checks and balances" is, when Trump makes a move, you democrats get to null and void it, and anything less than that is an abomination
face facts.
@kingdavid403 saidWhether I admit it or not is irrelevant. the fact is we have a congressional component, a judicial and an executive. The balance is there.

Trump has had several initiatives stymied by a judge in the - what, 11th district, I believe?
Or the congress stopping funding of the wall?
Nothing wrong with the system, nor is Trump abridging it. It's just the mumbles and groans of TDS people you hear.

Congress holds the purse strings to non-military spending; they do not have to fund the baby's wall.

Well, we that lean a little left heard constant sniveling, moans, grumblings, etc; for at least eight years when ODS people could not handle Obama; and still can't.
You have at least five years to catch up with us. 🙂 Which hopefully will not happen. 🙂
