...'cause they're rationing health care there. How come Obama bin Laden and Madame Hillary never mention rationing when waxing eloquently about government-run health care for Americans? Could it be that the "R" word would stop any discussion of "free" health care dead in it's tracks?

I'm from Glasgow. Growing old isn't really one of our options.

Very low life expectancy.
I blame the haggis! (however, it probably has more to do with deep fried mars bars).

Missing the point, as usual.

The point here is that, in Scotland, unlike the rest of the yookay, personal care for elderly people is free.

In England, old people are forced to sell their homes or other assets to pay for their care. In Scotland, it is free.

So, you're better off growing old in Scotland.

Correction there Red:

It is not free. You've either paid for it yourself, or if you're a parasite and you're making someone else pay for it against their will.

Not free.

Even by your own arguement, which I don't accept, it is still free to the person receiving the service.

Which is better than the rest of the uk.

Where did the money come from that is paying for the service?

It is quite likely you've paid for it by taxation, or certainly some of it.

But this isn't by any means certain.

It is perfectly possible to pay no taxes and still get the benefits of other people's taxation.

And quite rightly.

Meaning that even if you're unemployed all your life, you are still looked after when you're old.

And I think it's something you Americans should be looking at, seeing the way your economy is going. You'll be glad of a safety net in the end.
Europe wasn't for the first 1200 years either.

It's still not 'free'. Free is free from force. The only way it cvould be considered free is if it is given voluntarily

Please refrain from using the 'f' word until you know what it means.

I'm a NZer Shav, and I've seen the so called safety net. When my parents were younger the pollies told them "Give us this money now, and we'll give it back later when you're old" Unfortunately the pollies that made that promise are gone along with most of the money.

Safety net? More like a couple of strands of rotted cotten. Unless you've made provision yourself (on top of investing in the compulsory gummint scheme) you're gonig to fall....fallll....falllllll
