Elizabeth Holmes, the thief.
It isn't even a real prison -- there's a WSJ article that describes the place. It's a college dorm. It has TVs that you can watch while outside. She can see her kids every weekend. And she won't serve half her sentence. All this for stealing BILLIONS.
Please someone try to convince me people like her that commit financial fraud deserve to get such lenient sentences, but non violent drug offenders get decades. Her crime in harming others is much clearer. No one is asking for their investments to be stolen. Plenty of people are asking for drugs.
Her only saving grace - maybe - is that the people she stole money from didn't need it. If they needed the money, they would have done their homework on the investment because there was plenty of indicators that her snake oil didn't cure snakes.
@wildgrass
So maybe she serves 6 years, I wonder whether she snuck some of that money into secret overseas accounts so she can continue the grift after she gets out.
@wildgrass
Bernie Madoff got a much longer sentence, 150 years (ensures no parole). I'd say Holmes got off lightly.
@moonbus saidWhy do you think that is?

If you look at the broader trend of financial crimes, I think Bernie Madoff is the outlier. Most get off on technicalities. Some do cream puff sentences like Elizabeth Holmes. None are treated as bad as drug dealers, who are just entrepreneurs identifying a high-demand market.
@wildgrass
Or that witchhunt where they are actually putting people in prison for that peaceful political discourse on Jan 6🙂
@wildgrass
Do you think her being a woman has anything to do with it?
Women typically get lighter sentences than men, but nobody wants to talk about how unfair it is. Judges (especially men judges) think to themselves "but she has children" and that is followed by a light sentence.
Women can almost get away with murder, especially if they are moms.
@metal-brain saidNote that Elizabeth Holmes has two children, each incubated and birthed during her criminal trial. There is rampant speculation that she got pregnant in order to delay trial (which actually worked) and gain sympathy for a lighter sentence.

It's kind of crazy that you get maternity leave from a criminal trial even if you are the defendant.
Diabolical.
@metal-brain saidThanks for your antiquated sexism.

@wildgrass saidShe played that well.
