It is, of course, a disgrace that there are a couple of BNP MEPs for the UK.

But it is important to understand that their vote didn't actually increase that much, if any.

It is simply that their share of the vote increased as the turnout dropped.

But they need to be tackled, at every level, by every means.

A bad thing.

I am a centrist. A social democrat.

In terms of political science I am what one might almost call pleased with the showing at the polls of extremist parties such as the BNP.

First, great to see some debate about the recent election, It is a major problem for the parliaments legitimacy that the turn outs are so low across the EU. The total lack of proper debate in most countries also shows that people don't care the least.

Now to your question,
I get angry every time right-wing extremists gain ground in any country on any c ...[text shortened]... y. But the big winner in the election the EPP-ED group is far from being right wing extremists.
Griffin won 2 seats out of 785 seat in total, or around a quarter of a percent. Its approximately 2,5% of UK 78 seats. Did other pathetic fascist parties gain ground in other countries ? Likely. But the big winner in the election the EPP-ED group is far from being right wing extremists.

True. however, the fact that they won seats both in Europe and in the UK shows how there is a reasonable number of people who agree with their policies.
There is a lot of people (in the UK) who moved to the far-right after the scandals involving mainstream parties, there is a lack of trust, and that feeling isn't going away.

in Brighton the green party won ... bnp were second ... but no one got a clear share ... 15% or less

I think its a good result actually . there isn't so much extremism if all the right wingers are out numbered by greens. n there were about 12 other parties getting a reasonable share of the vote.

i think the greens show people want a positive change. the bnp are good a capitialising on discontent
but don't offer any solutions. we need a good liberal party to. lib dems have been rubbish / left of labour for to long

And, as in the case of the Ukip leader, gleefully go wild on the MEP expenses and allowances scheme (which puts the UK's recent debacle in the shade). Farage has told anyone who will listen that he racked up several million pounds on the EU gravy train as n MEP...
