French ex-president Sarkozy has been sentenced to a year of house arrest (he gets to wear a bracelet) for campaign fund fraud (stemming from his 2012 run for office).

"It was the first time in France’s modern history that a former president has been convicted and sentenced to a prison term for actions during his term."

People, this is how it's done in a republic: no one is above the law.

No, he can't "With the appeal pending".

Why did you leave that out?

Talk about ignorant, you only read what you want to believe. Maybe that's why you fools can never learn anything.

I am both heartened and dismayed by the French legal system.

Dismayed that it took 12 years to reach a verdict. I hope the American legal system can deal with Trump more expeditiously.

I am heartened that the French legal system did not tolerate such ludicrous pseudo-arguments as:

1. That a former president enjoys perpetual immunity from prosecution for crimes committed while in office (which Trump's legal team has argued);

2. that the presidency is not really an "office" and that therefore a certain constitutional amendment does not apply to their client (which Trump's legal team has argued);

or 3. that someone is going to be disenfranchised if the presumptive front-runner is prevented from running for an 'office' which isn't really an office or from holding it (which Trump's legal team has argued).

The French courts simply judged the case on its factual merits (either Sarkozy exceeded the funding limit or he did not), without getting mired in a constitutional crisis. Hurrah for France!

Judging the case on factual merits is exactly what Trump's legal team wants to avoid, for the obvious reason that the facts tell against their client. Trump will not blink at wrecking the judicial system to get what he wants. Beware, America!

Once his appeals have been exhausted, his life will be much less pleasant.

I am not a liberal. I am very conservative when it comes to law and order: criminals should go to jail, no matter how rich and powerful they may be.

What I was thinking was, with all that delay, the X was making interest on the money he sucked out of the system so he has that🙂
If it takes 12 years to convict Trump of crimes, not just the fraud and defamation cases he has already been charged with 100 million +. like 25 million for his so called Trump University and Trump so called charity and now 80 megs for defamation.
His base doesn't give a rats ass about any of that AND there have been interviews of Trumpites who said we NEED a dictatorship. There are some really sick puppies out there.
