We saw the close ups of his ear and there was a clear path the bullet took, not like a whacking of a piece of glass which would have been more like a long scratch mark, there was definite skin missing on his ear and a line of the bullet passage.

What difference does it make whether it was shrapnel or direct bullet? if it was shrapnel that stuff got to his ear because of a bullet. The bullet caused the streak in his ear whether it was shrapnel or not but in this case it was a real bullet.
