well, in the UK anyway : http://www.guardian.co.uk/g2/story/0,,2009096,00.html

Some of you "stupid white men" may sneer, but I think this is a good thing. The Guardian article talks about the mainstreaming of the sex and porn industries, and how this is increasingly being targeted at young people. I watched a documentary last night on BBC3 which described how a whole generation of teenagers are - perfectly legally - getting hooked on hardcore porn via the internet.

Violence against women has many causes, but logic and experience suggest that the high levels of violence today reflects a difficulty that some men have in relating to women as human beings, an attitude fostered by the sex and porn industries. More shocking still than the high level of rape is the pathetic conviction rate for rapists, which reflects the institutional sexism of the police force and the criminal justice system.

More than 30 years after the Equal Pay Act, women are still paid less than men, and they can still be sacked for getting pregnant.

In other words: "This is what I think, but I have no evidence for it - I just feel that way and assume everyone else does too. Whenever I watch porn I have urges to rape and beat women. It must be somebody else's fault. There's no way sex and violence toward women could be psychologically associated in my mind."

How do you know what the conviction rate for rapists is? If they're not convicted, I would imagine they are not properly called rapists. Do you mean "accused rapists"?

Well, seeing as rape reporting is as low as 16%, we're off to a bad start already. One does wonder if being worried about false convictions is just paranoia.
I agree on you with the porn bit though.

According to our enlightened liberal friends porn is liberating and should be made legal ......

I don't know about porn liberating women, but I do know that criminalising anything is a denial of liberty. It should only be done in the most dire circumstances and when people are hurting others against their will.

The effect of porn on men is hotly disputed. Some researchers claim that if anything, it's beneficial, as it provides a harmless release for violent energies.

There is evidence however to suggest that it's harmful :

http://www.mediawatchuk.org/publications/Harmfulpornography.htm - "A new study has found that viewing pornography is harmful to the viewer and society. In a meta-analysis (a statistical integration of all existing scientific data), researchers have found that using pornographic materials leads to several behavioural and social problems.
One of the most common psychological problems is a deviant attitude towards intimate relationships such as perceptions of sexual dominance, submissiveness, sex role stereotyping or viewing persons as sexual objects. Behavioural problems include fetishes and excessive or ritualistic masturbation. Sexual aggressiveness, sexually hostile and violent behaviours are social problems as well as individual problems that are linked to pornography."

http://www.csun.edu/~vcpsy00h/pornog.htm - "In one survey, I looked at sixty two percent of rapists, fifty three percent of male object pedophiles, and fifty six percent of female object pedophiles were regular engagers in pornography.
The facts are clear. Sex and violent crime offenders have a critical link to pornography. These sex offenders had a high exposure to pornography as adolescents, and it carries on with them during their lifetime."

I find this evidence credible because the nature of much hardcore porn is to objectify and degrade women.

Does this mean that porn should be banned ?

Well, not a blanket ban - that would not be helpful. But there should most certainly be more controls.

There should be a serious drive to prevent kids under 16 from gaining access to hardcore porn. For instance all porn sites should be registered with their country and origin, and forced to shut down if they allow access to U-16s.

High street shops where children might wander in should not openly display pornographic magazines.

Deliberately accessing hardcore pornographic material in the workplace should automatically be a disciplinary offence as it already is in many offices, on the basis that the sites are offensive to other workers.

Everyone that watches TV, whether a commercial for automobiles or a series such as Friends, will be innundated with images of women as sex objects more than full human beings (although the boys in Friends display low wattage, too). For such subordination, one does not need porn.

This is like video games and violence. Correlation isn't proof, it's correlation. If rapists were more likely to use a certain brand of fabric softner, should that brand be banned?
I don't see what they say are behavioural problems as problems. As long as it's between consenting adults (or all alone), let people enjoy what they want to. A rapist may be likely to watch porn, but it doesn't mean it made him a rapist.
Don't forget that there were rapings before porn even existed.

I agree with your points about what should be done, and I'd like to add that pornography should never be censored.

The history of the male-dominated world is the history of relegating the work women do to the illusion of non-work. The porn industry and the role of women in it reflects a society that is coming to value the work women do. Degredation is working on an assembly line. The movement to censor porn is a manifestation of the same good-old-boy attitude of days past: the minute that women appear to be successful and independent, their activity is immediatly deemed to be some kind of abomination.

The same goes for prostitution.
