Interesting read and exactly why we will never get rid of it. Sounds like you are helping the poor, but we are really lining the pockets of the rich.

Soda makers, for example, bag an estimated $4 billion a year in taxpayer money through the food stamp program.

Here in Oklahoma, our food stamp program was being used in strip joints.

In the words of Ben Carson, “By the time I reached ninth grade, mother had made such strides that she received nothing but food stamps. She couldn’t have provided for us and kept up the house without that subsidy.”

He writes elsewhere, “As I’ve said, we received food stamps and couldn’t have made it without them.”

So what is your alternative to food stamps?

Government food handouts? Soup lines?

Just like forcing people to buy health insurance instead of the government hiring doctors and nurses.

I'm not sure what point you're trying to make. You're for universal healthcare?

So what is your alternative to food stamps? You never did answer.

I think I did answer your question. I said government food handouts, maybe soup lines. Have food available, not money. I think I even started a thread on that.

No, I'm not for universal healthcare, I'm just pointing out how Obamacare is just another form of croney captialism.

Once a benefit is established, and it grows, weaning those using it is almost impossible. Nobody is starving (ok almost nobody). Poor kids are most often obese.

My sister is grossly overweight, and uses all her food stamps every month. Most families receiving food stamps have cars, TVs, DVD players, cable TV and other non essential items.

There are problems with that approach as well. I used to live in Cleveland next to a big Catholic church which had a soup kitchen daily. It was on Euclid Avenue a main artery out of downtown to the East side. I could look out my window, and daily see men in expensive business suits in line for the free meals. It is really difficult to limit give aways to the target audience.

Even food stamps often don't go to people with real needs, but to people who know how to game the system. One problem of all kinds of relief, is that any effort to eliminate the fraud is always demeaning to the recipients.

Every dog has fleas, the question is which ones? Richer people taking the time to get a free basic meal seems a bit better than milking millions and eating high on the hog.

My ex-wife used to buy soda pop with food stamps. Here in Michigan there is a 10 cent refund on the bottles and the food stamps cover it. She can return the bottles and get a small amount of cash from that loophole. I feel that loophole should be closed to avoid subsidizing soda pop companies.

The way the DHS does things here in Michigan is very unjust. After a divorce if your spouse claims your kids for food benefits before you do she keeps them. Even when you have joint custody the DHS will not allow you to claim the kids. They will tell you they will not open another case with those kids on another. If you have 2 kids they will not put one child each on a separate case to divide the food benefits equally, even if she earns more than you. They don't care. They will tell you that is just the way it is.

Food stamps should be abolished unless they strive for equality. People will buy hot dogs to feed their cats instead of cat food because food stamps don't buy cat food. The system is too liberal to some while uncaring to others.

Essentially you are not so immoral as to let people starve to death, but you'll be damned if you have to pay to help them with anything other than the bare minimum.

Of course you probably have no problem with other free handouts such as tax breaks for the rich.

The American social security system (or lack thereof) is widely ridiculed in the more prosperous regions of Europe. Indeed, even most self-identified right wingers would be appalled by a food stamp programme, which would bring back sour memories of WW2, when food stamps were used because of food shortages. It takes a tiny amount of money to ensure everyone has enough money to buy food, and there is no rational reason not to.

Food stamps are not money, they are credits to get food. It does take taxpayer money to set up these credits though.

The American Food Benefit program is primitive in the way it is operated. It is unjust and pathetic. Fairness is not a consideration when these credits are given out. When a couple gets a divorce and are separated there is a race to get the food stamps first before your ex spouse does. It is a first come first serve basis program. The first to file gets full benefits from the kids and the second to file gets only himself and cannot claim the kids at all if he has 50% custody. He cannot claim the kids because she filed first.

Equality is thrown out the door. They do not care. Retards set up the American food stamp system.

Better food stamps than giving away billions to wealthy oil companies in the form of subsidies.

As long as people have your attitude, things will never change. It is sad and pathetic that such attitudes exist. It makes real change impossible and means that this country must fall.

Eladar- Indeed, when our country ceases to exist...it will be all MY fault. 🙄
