Still, if someone wanted to wear a wetsuit like what surfers or divers wear, is that not allowed? Because that's pretty much what burkinis are. I can't see any valid reason to ban those.
The French court's ruling cited separation of church and state (state officials can't wear religious symbols). I get that but what about private citizens? Why should they also be banned from wearing religious items?

Anyhoo… personally, banning the burkini is stupid. If people want to swim looking like bloody penguins escaped from a mental asylum, that’s up to them.
That being said, I can quite imagine that if one’s in a bikini and someone turns up in a burkini, that one could feel rather uncomfortable.
Thinking along the lines of: “Hey, he’s looking at my near naked girlfriend, and all I get in return is a plastic bin bag.”
Or, maybe as a woman being looked upon as whores, for wearing a bikini, could be intimidating.
