"An Inconvenient Price
Want to eliminate what otherwise will soon be the world's second leading cause of death? Impose a global speed limit of 5mph.

Newsweek

Oct 22, 2007 Issue

...

Global warming was blamed for 35,000 deaths in Europe's August 2003 heat wave. Cold, however, has caused 25,000 deaths a year recently in England and Wales—47,000 in each winter from 1998 to 2000. In Europe, cold kills more than seven times as many as heat does. Worldwide, moderate warming will, on balance, save more lives than it will cost—by a 9-to-1 ratio in China and India. So, if substantially cutting carbon dioxide reverses warming, that will mean a large net loss of life globally.

...

The U.N.'s 2007 report estimates that by 2100, sea levels will rise about a foot—as much as they have risen since 1860. That will mean a number of local problems, not a planetary crisis. More people now live near coasts (which is why hurricanes have become more costly; they have not become more frequent or violent), but protecting people and property from the sea would be far less costly than attempting to turn down the planet's thermostat.

Five years ago it was "Global warming isn't happening."

Two years ago it was "Okay, global warming is happening, but we didn't cause it and there's nothing we can do about it."

Now it's "Allright, global warming is happening, and yes we're causing it and we probably COULD do something about it, but we shouldn't do it for economic and other reasons."

So, it looks to me like we're making progress.

cold kills people that are too idiotic to put on some clothes or they are homeless. in both cases suggesting we should get the average temperature up as a solution is idiotic

The same kind of ting can be said for those killed by heat.

They're too stupid to go where it's air conditioned or too stupid to drink enough fluids. Or, they're homelss.

And totally misguided.

If, as predicted, the melt water from the artic stops the Gulf Stream, then Ireland and all of Western Europe would become freezing.

Ireland is on the same latitude as Canada, yet our temperate weather is provided by the constant supply of warm water by the Gulf Stream.

Of course, to keep the debate simple, zeeblebot would only have us think of 1 instance of death due to global warming. We shouldn't take into account people who die due to increased and more violent weather phenomena like hurricanes, typhoons, flash flooding, drought, etc, etc, etc, etc.

And sure, if we're looking at global warming in pure economic terms, we shouldn't consider the cost of flooded real estate due to the rising sea. Of course, most major cities aren't situated on a river. 🙄

Are you saying the lives of people living in Europe are more valuable than the lives of people living in say, India or North Korea?

All he's saying is that cold kills more people than heat, which is true, so in increase in temperature would lead to a decrease in temperature related deaths and unless lives of Europeans are more valuable than those of the Chinese, for exmaple, where the deaths come from shouldn't make any difference.

How come nobody ever discusses the "benefits" of global warming? Global warming is a disaster only if you live in areas affected by it. I'm sure Russia and Siberia aren't too worried about extending the growing season in the Western Urals or Siberia. Also, just the other day, I read about winegrowers in British Columbia, Canada! I'm sure there are many other benefits as well, but there's an embargo by the dinosaur media on any "global warming" stories with a positive spin on them.
