EDIT - Wikipedia says that UCB's version of Unix/Linux became the standard or something at a certain point, but not that the university came up with it originally.
Linux was started by Linux Torvalds who was a student at Helsinki University in Finland in the early 1990's
Unix is completely different code and was started in the late 60's early 70's at Bell Labs. There is no standard Unix but instead several versions and additions. Berkeley additions were very popular and included in many different version. Nowadays there are fewer Unix variants based on the original code. There is a UNix that is distributed much like Linux that is based around Berkeley source and that is BSD which is relatively common and free.
