Newt Gingrich only knows how to shut down a government. And how to get lots of expensive jewelry for his wife.
Not to mention, several of his publicized rants against the Obama administration mark him as a political figure sorely lacking in critical thinking skills, if not basic common sense.

I think we all remember that amusing scenario about the Obama presidency culminating in an atheist society potentially dominated by Islamic extremists.

Not that I think either one will get nominated let alone be elected President what do you feel would happen if they were ? How would we not "survive" ? In what way would it be worse than Obama ?
And... what if Newt Gingrich were elected President ? Would we "survive" ?
On the Gingrich question, if I had to choose (ugh!) between the currently running Republicans and Huntsman was not an option, I would probably go with Gingrich or Santorum. At least both of them have experience in positions where they had to attempt to build consensus, and might have the pragmatism to break many of the promises they're making to the tea party set. In fact, Gingrich doesn't have much of a soul whatsoever. It would be like reinstating Clinton only 10 degrees to the right rather than the left. Hopefully he would at least try to be a statesman. Maybe Romney as well, but he will have to constantly throw bones to the far right whereas Gingrich can probably afford to screw them over, even after his throwing Paul Ryan under the bus earlier in the campaign.

I'm fairly confident that Romney has flip-flopped himself into too many corners to win, and Obama's team will take him apart methodically. When you have to run against your own landmark legislation, you've got serious problems. And there is a good 2 to 3 percentage of voters ...[text shortened]...

Huntsman really was your best chance. But he was pro-science. That kills his chances.
The country would survive. It would be a disaster, but probably not much worse than GWB.

A second Obama term doesn't look like its going to be a return to wine and roses either though at least we'll get a slightly better health care system.
