He is 121 years old and wonders why there is so much disruption in societal activity, things that were unheard of in his day. He was cruising the internet and saw where instead of arresting and prosecuting, and jailing what he calls a car thief (they have other monikers now), they instead sue the maker of the car because they make it easy to steal!!!
I said 'no way, grandpa.." And darn if he did not pull up this story. As Shav said earier, what is wrong with you bloody people? And my gdaddy wants to know, too. And, I want to know. Conservatives don't do this.

That's false. car thieves are still prosecuted.

The issue is that these cars have security issues that can be easily rectified. The states want the manufacturers to update their technology so consumers aren't affected, and law enforcement doesn't have to keep dealing with preventable car theft.

I have a Kia and had to have it taken back to the dealer to have the security update, which they did for free.

Govt power move, Vivify. You libs will never admit it. In granddaddy's day, they would simply not buy the car. You once again see evidence of the diff in a conservative (him) and a liberal nanny-state guy...you.
You are blaming the car maker for crime in Chicago. I will not even bother with one of my analogies.

I only have a little finger on my right hand. I want to buy a car that is real easy to start. Will the govt now make all cars difficult to start?

Unsurprising, right wingers have no ideas that might actually reduce crime.

Or do anything else constructive for that matter.

Tidbit from the article:

"The lawsuit noted that engine immobilizers, a security technology that requires a key with a special chip to send an encrypted signal to start the car, are standard in most U.S.-sold cars, but are absent in many Kia and Hyundai cars sold in the U.S.

Chicago alleged that this has “caused a car theft crisis” and noted that in 2022, more than 8,800 Kia and Hyundai vehicles were stolen in Chicago alone, which represents 41% of the city’s car thefts that year, even though Kia and Hyundai vehicles made up just 7% of cars in the city."

So you have a foreign company increasing its profit margin by refusing to install standard anti-theft security systems. Joe says there's nothing to be done.

if it’s negligence, then it needs addressing.

That being said, the US does have a tendency for law-suiting everything. And that is just no good.

So, if you already bought the tainted snake oil, the unsafe vehicle, etc. tough luck for you. Now you have to find a product you think is safe but there's no government watchdog agency to make sure the product is safe. I suppose you just depend on word of mouth via family and friends.

You are taking this around in circles, Joe. The police are the nannies?

Orrr is it a police state?

This seems like a pretty standard moral hazard debate. If the car is stolen, does the car owner expect some sort of effort by the city to enforce laws against grand theft auto, and help the owner get the car back?

If not, then we're fine driving whatever. But the city's consuming huge $$$ resources that could easily be fixed at the manufacturing level, then maybe that's a simpler solution.

Thanks for proving my point; no actual ideas just a mindless regurgitation of right wing propaganda attacking almost completely imaginary things that you have been told "liberals" support.

Marauder, you don't want to go there. .....to discuss reducing crime when you people will not prosecute criminals and put them in jail.
Jesus. Yeah, I said you people. Note that you have never suggested prosecuting criminals, and putting them in jail. Write back anything that suits you, you are yet a bleeding liberal, and that is simply your mindset.
Don't you just hate it?: Chewing on your pillow at night?

Constructive? Why, that would be jailing these cretins. And so funny that we don't have any ideas to reduce crime.
Has everyone noticed that Marauder has never said that de-funding police is a bad idea. He LOVES the idea. Libs, defunding police. But he implies above that it is our job to reduce crime while he defunds police. What another wasted post of yours.
