The marriage rate in Great Britain has collapsed to its lowest point since its government began keeping statistics in 1862. Now, even marriage is being called into question, says Stephen Flurry. I have to ask: How much longer till Great Britain's collapse is complete?

I don't know what the divorce rates are in the "f-ing US OF A," but that might be an excellent subject for a research paper. However, I predict that they are very high because the marriage rates are also very high since the population is younger than Great Britain's. After all, marriage is a young person's game.

The rates are the same in both countries. I wonder what your point is.

Do you have any links to any studies of U.S. rates?

Somebody seems to be having a hard time staying on the debate topic.

No, the previous poster was relating 3 concepts to the thread topic.

DSR used divorce rates to imply the collapse of british society. The poster pointed out that since divorce rates in the US are basically the same, yet since DSR does not propose US society is crumbling, then his argument is flawed.

On Topic enough?

This is a sad stat though.

"Of the marriages that stay together, based on a recent column in the Sunday Times, an incredible 59 percent of married women said they would leave their husbands tomorrow if they could be assured of economic stability"

Do you really think that's true?

Maybe I'm being nieve but I really don't think money makes the world go round. I think how these women were asked the question is important.
Afterall how much is enough money?
-Enough to feed and cloth your childern- well at the very least the state would cover that.
-Enough to live the life you are accustomed to? If you're so unhappy that you'd devorce then that hasn't made you happy yet.

I think these wives answered that way for different reasons- perhaps because the real reason that they might want a devorce, but not try for one is private or because of the way the question was worded.

I once read an article about "how much is enough", over a thousand britians were polled about what would make them feel like they had enough (material goods, housing etc...) the average was $3.2 million (US).

Really? That must be over a life time maybe? I read something about a case where a child diss-owned her adopted parents who then asked her to pay them what it had cost in money to raise her and it came to over a million quid.

Are people really that materialistic?? I find it hard to beleive. My brother earns good money in London with computer programming but he's happiest living in a caravan in the outback of Australia. Maybe money is just the easiest thing to aim for?

Money is simply one of the easiest ways to get the other things that you want. Your brother probably wouldn't be able to travel to Australia often if he didn't have a well paying job.
