"Hurricane warnings were posted for the northern Gulf Coast from Cameron, Louisiana, eastward to the Alabama-Florida border, including the city of New Orleans, Louisiana and Lake Pontchartrain.
New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin called Gustav "the mother of all storms," saying its destruction could outstrip that from Katrina, which flooded much of his city.
New Orleans joined the growing list of local governments in south Louisiana ordering mandatory evacuations on Saturday and Sunday as Gustav roared past Cuba and into the Gulf of Mexico.
"This is very, very serious, and we need you to heed this warning," he said. "We really don't have the resources to rescue you after this."

How do you assess the situation in New Orleans ? Do you think the authorities and the media are exagerating what is about to happen ? Is a mandatory evacuation in its place ? Is the evacuation going as it should ? Is it possible to evacuate so many people in so short a time ?
Originally posted by ivanhoeThey have had plenty of time to evacuate before this hits, but then again they had plenty of time before Katrina. It's just a matter of do you have brains enough to leave and forget all the thieves staying behind to rob your stores of nike's and big screen tvs.

Originally posted by torch71You are right, I have been hearing of this storm for a few days now. Even if some do not have vehicles, they still have legs, or most do. 😉

Originally posted by SickboyThis is from the aftermath of Katrina when all those people stayed. Look I live in Florida and everyone gets plenty of warning to leave. Sometimes you have to use common sense and be safe not sorry. The people of Louisiana have known that they are looking at Gusta coming right up thier gut for about a week now, so if you are in the aftermath then you are a fool.
Really? Watch this clip from Fox News.

That's why there will always be people complaining about what went wrong ... and the usual choir is allready practising.

I'm curious to see how the two presidential candidates will handle the situation. Who's got the dignity and class to be fair towards those handling the situation ànd those criticising them ?

The folks in the Superdome and the bridge were prevented by the National Guard from walking to better conditions (they were disallowed from entering the nearest town was clean water, food, and electricity). And yes, this was after, 6 days after. No food, no water, and not allowed to leave.
Isn't this after the hurricane hit? And if I am not misstaken, they had a few days to get out of there also.
As for them all being "thieves". Right. I'm sure all the babies had there eyes on the silver... The real answer is they were poor and had nowhere to go.
Originally posted by torch71I think you'll find every road out of the place has been choked up solid and finding transport to get out if you don't have a vehicle is going to be very hard. Then you also have human nature that says its not going to be that bad, you're not going to have another Katrina so soon, so if I just sit tight, all the fuss will be over in a few days and they'll all be coming back and i wouldn't have wasted my time.

My experience with people not wanting to leave buildings when the fire alarms are going off and they are being told to get out its not a drill, tells me that some people if left alone will only react after the disaster has trapped them.

"... for those in New Orleans unable to evacuate from Hurricane Katrina when it struck in late August 2005. "
Despite the planned use of the Superdome as an evacuation center, government officials at the local, state and federal level came under criticism for poor planning and preparation. On August 28, the Louisiana National Guard delivered three truckloads of water and seven truckloads of MREs (meals ready to eat), enough to supply 15,000 people for three days. There was no water purification equipment on site, no chemical toilets, no antibiotics and no anti-diarrheals stored for a crisis. There were no designated medical staff at work in the evacuation center. There was no established sick bay within the Superdome, and there were very few cots available that hadn't been brought in by evacuees.
Typical liberal thinking. People can't get out of town themselves if there is a problem. The government has to do it for them.
They may be true for people who have learned to live on the governement's hand outs, but it isn't true for people who work for a living.
I can think of only one case where a company was a fault and neglegent. It had to do with a convelecent hospital. But most people should be responsible enough to find a way out of the area.
But I suppose that's just my way of thinking.
