Today is the day Tenzin Gyatso the spiritual leader and incarnation of the previous Dalai Lama turns 71. We should celebrate that they managed to locate the sea of wisdom once again and that he's reached such an admirable age.
Everyday there is joy somewhere in the world. Good idea this, Scottish. đ

6 July, 1887 - David Kalakaua, monarch of the Kingdom of Hawaii, is forced at gunpoint, at the hands of Americans, to sign the Bayonet Constitution giving Americans more power in Hawaii while stripping Hawaiian citizens of their rights.
1885 - French chemist Louis Pasteur administers his first successful treatment of an anti-rabies vaccine.
Now, that's more like it. đ
Originally posted by Bosse de NageTurns out to be quite a day for the GOP. George Dubbya the 43rd prez was born on this day in 1946. This is the same day that in 1854 the Republican Party was formed and a little known fact only subtly alluded to, but a person rumoured to be the first female president of America, Nancy Reagan was also born on this day in 1921.

6 July is also 50 cent's birthday.

"In his message to Congress in December 1893, President Cleveland reported fully and accurately on the illegal acts of the conspirators. He described the event “as an act of war, committed with the participation of a diplomatic representative of the United States and without the authority of Congress.” He acknowledged that by such acts the government of a peaceful and friendly people was overthrown. He further concluded that a “substantial wrong has thus been done which a due regard for our national character as well as the rights of the injured people requires that we should endeavor to repair.” (http://www.northwesthawaiitimes.com/onipaa.htm).
But apparently Hawai'i has an independence movement! Beware the rise of aloha-fascism...

"In a letter to Sanford Dole, President Cleveland acknowledged the wrong and asked Dole to resign and restore the authority of the Hawaiian Kingdom. In his reply to the President, Dole refused. Instead, Hawai`i was proclaimed a Republic on July 4, 1894 with one goal in mind: annexation to the United States. The intensive lobbying efforts in the U.S. Congress by pro-annexationists convinced Congress that Hawai`i ’s strategic location in the Pacific would be beneficial to the United States and Hawai`i was annexed in 1898.
Since Hawai`i became the 50th State in 1959, the tremendous economic, political and social changes of the 19th century continued into the 20 th as land, native language, culture, and political sovereignty were denied to the Hawaiian people. Determined to preserve their cultural identity, Hawaiians today look to the 21st century as a new beginning for self-determination and self-governance."
Summary: the people of Hawai'i weren't strong enough to resist colonisation. Into the melting pot with them! (The USA wasn't alone in its infamy--similar stunts were pulled by Tsarist Russia, the British Empire, Belgium, etc. Of course most of Russia and the UK's colonies are now independent!)

"The administration of Grover Cleveland commissioned the Blount Report, and based on its findings believed that the overthrow of Liliʻuokalani was illegal and offered November 16, 1893 to give the throne back to her if she granted amnesty to everyone responsible. She initially refused, saying that she would have them beheaded. With this development, then-President Grover Cleveland sent the issue to the United States Congress. Although she changed her mind on December 18, 1893, and U.S. Minister Willis demanded her reinstatement by the Provisional Government, the Provisional Government refused. Congress responded to Cleveland's referral with another investigation, and submitted the Morgan Report by the U.S. Senate on February 26, 1894, which exonerated both Minister Stevens and the U.S. troops from any responsibility for the overthrow. On July 4, 1894, the Republic of Hawaiʻi was proclaimed and Sanford B. Dole, one of the first people who originally called on the institution of the monarchy to be abolished, became President. It was recognized immediately by the United States government."
