What can be expected from the new PM? Is he going to stay there long?

I cant see him lasting less than 7 years.

Even if the Tories win 42% of the vote the vagries of our electoral system Labour would still win.

I don't think the English really want a Scot as PM, I think we will get sick of big government. But Gordon is stronger than Cameron. He will have a honeymoon much as Major did. In fact we are in a very similar situation to when Major took over. Brown is a safe pair of hands, and the Tories are not yet ready to mount a serious challenge.

Nothing. It'll be exactly the same as Blair's stint in power. He's made his fortune and jumped ship before it sank, leaving the same old cronies running the show in the same old way. The only difference is that there's a different face on the cannon fodder taking the flak from the populace.

Most poeple can;t really see him as the new PM.

He was the best chanceller the UK had in a long time and the economy grow well, but as PM, I just don't think he can cut it.

Not really sure the opposition will be any better (Camero the clown), so by defult he may end up staying, but not many people will be happy about it.

By GB I meant Gordon Brown.

Sottish Independence is not likely to happen inside 7 years.
Welsh Independence is much further away.

Then there are few referendums to approve it all. Don't under estimate the little Englander or the Daily Mail.

Never say Never you are right. But Highly unlikely under Gordon

The thing is, the anti-Scottish factor is nullified considerably by the fact that both Menzies Campbell and Dave Cameron are themselves Scottish - Brown may be the son of the manse, but Cameron is the son of an Aberdonian stockbroker.

I'm more pessimistic; I think Brown is superlatively talented, but I think he's the new Jim Callaghan - every second person I meet talks about the tax burden being too high, and the Tory lead in the polls is too great for him to do more than win a small majority or a mere plurality. After that he might govern by consensus (a Brown-Campbell coalition would work well in some respects because Brown would prefer to counter the Campaign group with Liberal Democrat votes) for another year or two, but the resurgence of the Right is tangible now. In 1992, we were reading Ziegler and Ben Pimlott's biographies of Harold Wilson; now publishers are churning out copies of Hague's bio of Robert Peel and William Wilberforce. The wheel is coming full circle.
