"Thanks to new research from renowned virologists and epidemiologists, we now know that natural immunity to the SARS-CoV-2 virus lasts only three to nine months. The reproductive number for COVID-19 is between 2-3. That means that in order to achieve herd immunity to COVID-19, 70 percent of the population would have be to infected every nine months! In other words, it’s impossible to achieve herd immunity to COVID-19 through widespread transmission."

Is that true?

@metal-brain saidIt’s not known yet.

There is a reasonable chance, that like with the flu vaccine, the vaccine will have to be updated every year and administered.
But that has more to do with viral mutations, rather than with the longevity of immunity.
As for how long immunity will actually last... it’s very difficult to predict.
There are very few cases of reinfection at the moment. The cases that have been reported are probably due to wrong testing, rather than reinfection.
Immunity consists of two bodily responses (pointless to go into details... google it for more info). And one of these responses includes the body’s memory of how to handle an attack.
In some viruses the body seems to remember for a long time. And sometimes a short time.
It’s even possible for people to have no more antibodies present, but that they’re still immune to future bouts of a virus (the cells which produce the antibodies are still in the body. B cells, I think they’re called). So that if the virus comes back into the body, the Antibodies can automatically be produced.
It will probably be a case of diminishing returns for the virus. Once it’s been in a body once, if it returns it’s far less effective (so a body will have far fewer symptoms).
However... this is a great deal of speculation, based upon my conversations with experts (so me interpretting what they were saying... and a virologist I ain’t) and based upon known virusses and patterns. This virus had 0 herd immunity 10 months ago. So nobody really knows for sure.
@shavixmir
And it might be like the flu, needing a new shot each year where there IS no herd 'mentality' as Trump likes to call it.
@Kewpie
Yep, that is what is sounds like we are leading into.
Too bad we can't find permanent immunity to covid's AND flu.
So is that due to big Pharm WANTING it that way for the bucks or is it inherent in humans to not gain total immunity?
@sonhouse saidMore profits for the vaccine makers.

@Metal-Brain
Sounds like envy to me.
