Look up Gabriel D'Annunzio for a counter-example to the dreamer stereotype.
I have recently read Gabriel's bio. and find the gentleman and war hero to be quite inspirational. As for his novels, i have chosen to ready, firstly, "The Child of Pleasure". Do you feel this to be a wise first read? Thank you for the heads up. And ahhh, does he write any porno?

Granny.

Not that Granny might not also be anti-intellectual.

As for the elitism or not of fiction, I'll share my own little bit of elitist snobbery. Fiction is for dreamers. Never been into fiction books or most ...[text shortened]... gh the Da-vin-chi CoDe in hardcover and at a talky. I've sworn to never uptake fiction again.
There is nothing wrong with fiction except when it's written by hacks who view everything through the lens of Marxist, feminist, or queer literary theory. Personally, I don't go for all that long-hair stuff -- I like my leisure reading to be a little more high concept, like "Doc Savage: Man of Bronze."
