Big world, lotta places to disappear, especially in a weird area that we're not familiar with, not to mention being supported by oil gazzilionaires and family who claim they're not radical muslims, but really are. How do you penetrate a totally alien culture that is helping someone hide?
Judge Crater vanished into thin air in our own country.....Chief Justice of New York's State Supreme Court. Withdrew a bunch of money, hopped in a cab, and was never seen again......just before some nasty allegations came to light about his personal and professional improprieties. It was a nationwide scandal and "Crater sightings" went on for over a decade.
