What has happened to us? The World is being ripped apart by men seeking dominance. For starters we have the 'Democracy v's Islam' conflict, where the World is being forced to choose between insane religious fundamentalists who are blowing up innocent people in the name of some Satanic interpretation of scripture. On the other hand we have scare mongers, whipping up fear among the general population in a cynical attempt to gain power and control by playing on peoples fears.

How can we, the peaceful silent majority (Christian, Muslim, whatever...) counter act this dreadful state of affairs?

When i watch the News and see my countries armed forces using guns and bombs to dominate the poor people of Iraq and Afghanistan, i feel sick to my stomach! I have friends who are being stationed in these places. When they joined the army/Navy/Air force, they did it for positive reasons. They did it to make the World a better place. In recent years Britain's armed forces have done some real good in the World, but now they find themselves torn in their loyalties as their lives are being put on the line fighting Wars that are born out of paranoia and opportunistic power politics.

Then on the other hand i see the divisions that are being put into my community based purely on racial lines. I have many Asian friends who are being targeted on the basis of their ethnicity. When the Madrid bombings happened, you could find a Policeman on the corner of every street in Wembley (a majority Asian community) where i happened to live at the time. This did nothing to make people safer. It did however make a clear statement about how our Government suddenly viewed this community... With suspicion.

All of a sudden, there are all these walls springing up all over the place (not literal walls, just psychological ones). I for one don't buy this sh;t for one second!!

If democracy is such a powerful system, surely i should have the right to vote about what approach should be taken to this issue? I look around at all the political parties (ones which stand the slightest chance of being elected at least) and see (quite conveniently) that no one is questioning this new status quo. Where once there was apathy in the electorate, suddenly we really NEED these people (or so we have been so convincingly scared into doing). What sane potential Leader is going to pass up the opportunity to have the population hanging on they're every word?? The press are no better. They're owned (quite literally) by a handful of very powerful men, who have elected to portray this biased and paranoid World view to the masses. Our society has suddenly become infested with negativity and fear, we have quite literally turned to the dark side! "There are all these people who want to kill us, how do we stop them?? KILL THEM FIRST!! KILL THEM FIRST!!!" This does not have the ring of sanity does it?

I for one don't want to sit around in apathy while these selfish fear mongers destroy the World around me. How do we break this negative cycle? Where is our saviour, the one who'll attack this problem with LOVE! War and aggression is not the answer, we all know that, surely? Look at any conflict throughout history. Peace is only achieved dialog, not fear and aggression.

I have to say that I agree with almost everything in your post, except for the title. Odd.

How can we sort this downward spiral out? With difficulty, obviously. Perhaps a more representative form of Democracy could work, but then, of course, the chances of electoral reform have a rather large similarity with Father Christmas: they're non-existent.

The most feasible manner of making a political difference in this country seems to me to be:

1. Forge a political career.
2. Make your way through the ranks by holding the party line.
3. When you gain a position of influence, surprise everyone into change.

Hmmm... says a lot, doesn't it.

Until mankind realises that the truth he seeks in his brethren is
the same as that he/she seeks in mankind.

Until we see the children of others as our own.

Until then we'll blow the c**p out of each other.

Says a lot yes. It was the tired political line though that
made mr Blair take us down the old route of war when s
many other options were available.

Males are indeed horrible. We would most assuredly be better off if we were to follow the fairer sex who cries uncontrollably at the first sign of stress.

Perhaps i should explain the title. Both sides of this nonsense are led by male denominators. The real trouble makers (Bush/BinLaden, etc...) are perfect examples of Men who experience too much testosterone!

This is how i see it...

Everything in existence is caught in a paradox. We (by this i mean things that exist, whether that means elementary particles, galaxies, grass, water, foxes or plankton) are caught between two rival needs.

1) We compete for energy.

In order to exist, we must have energy. Energy is finite. The phenomena that we come into contact with in the Universe, are all examples of stable structures that have by chance or through design achieved...

2) Balance with their surroundings!

Every now and then a thing pops into existence that competes for energy but does not give it back. These things are generally extremely successful on a very short time scale, but don't survive for long. The human race in my view needs to take this most fundamental truth into consideration if we are to make it (whatever that might mean).

Take Stars for example. They are billions and billions of individual bubbles of stable energy that are drawn together under their own gravity. Individually they are nothing, but combined they create a Goliath that freely gives all the energy we require to exist.

The human race could achieve so much more!!!

If we could pool our individual resources together, safe in the knowledge that all our needs are met by the group in an equal, wholey altruistic environment. What a force for good we could be! For all we know, this is the only place in the Universe where life exists. We owe it to 'life' to provide a little bit of back up. We should be spreading this through out the stars!

The only reason we are self aware is because of the competition that has influenced our evolution. However, we are self aware now. We are in a position to forge our own destiny in ways that have never been possible before.

When i referred to Male dominance, i was referring to the biological and hormonal impulses that men experience as part of their genetic programming. Evolution has rewarded men who have dominated their females/peers/groups, etc... But our knowledge of ourselves has caught up and we are aware of this unconscious force that is influencing our actions. We need to learn from the ancient things. The atoms, the Stars, the things that have achieved sustained existence.

They give back everything they take!!

This is a fundamental truth. We could be the dawning of a conscious Universe. Let's face it, on an extraordinarily small scale, that's exactly what we are...a self aware bubble of atoms. Our genes have made us what we are, but everything contains the seed of it's own destruction and allowing our World to be destroyed because we can't recognise our lives are driven by unconscious coercion by our genes is just tragic.

The powers that be are preventing us getting together, but the 'bad guys' in this situation are probably completely unaware that their actions are being driven by genetic influences. Our leaders should be altruistic in nature, but the ones we find ourselves with are anything but! This is because selfish actions are rewarded (in the short term). We need to come up with a system that removes this short term reward, or we are quite simply f***ed!

After the fall of communism, we experienced such a blissful period of peace (in the west anyway...) Then all of a sudden (literally on the 12th of September 2001) we willingly screwed it all up like an old news paper and went to war. Why? The people of the World need to stand up and say enough is enough! We don't want to be divided by vested interests like this, do we??

Hope that wasn't too hippy dippy...😉

Thank you for your posting, Marinkatomb - I've used my last available rec. on it - one of the most thoughtful topics I've seen raised here.

Humanity carries within it the seeds of its own destruction, and I believe that destruction to be inevitable, no matter how much we'd like it to be otherwise. This whole terrorist-paranoia thing has grown out of September 11 and the inability of traditional thinkers to deal with this new form of warfare.

Yet the world coped for decades after guerilla warfare first appeared, and resistance movements. How else are the poor and powerless going to defend themselves against attacks by the rich and powerful?

So why did the first major terrorist attack on the US produce such a destructive retaliatory force?

Dear Missy Oleum: You need to soak your head 3 times in a cold bucket of water and then, maybe, you'll be able think more clearly.
