OK, I admit this report from NPR is over a year old and I must have slept through it when it was current. I don't remember that this ever hit the big-time news headlines or anything, but it probably should have pissed someone off somewhere.

"December 14, 2006 · A fence-building company in Southern California agrees to pay nearly $5 million in fines for hiring illegal immigrants. Two executives from the company may also serve jail time. The Golden State Fence Company's work includes some of the border fence between San Diego and Mexico.

After an immigration check in 1999 found undocumented workers on its payroll, Golden State promised to clean house. But when followup checks were made in 2004 and 2005, some of those same illegal workers were still on the job. In fact, U-S Attorney Carol Lam says as many as a third of the company's 750 workers may have been in the country illegally.

Golden State Fence built millions of dollars' worth of fencing around homes, offices, and military bases. Its president and one of its Southern California managers will pay fines totaling $300,000. The government is also recommending jail time for Melvin Kay and Michael McLaughlin, probably about six months.

It is exceptionally rare for those who employ illegal immigrants to face any kind of criminal prosecution, let alone jail time. Earlier this week, for example, immigration raids on six meat-packing plants netted almost 1,300 suspected illegal workers. But no charges were leveled against the company that runs the plants: Swift.

Golden State Fence's attorney, Richard Hirsch, admits his client broke the law. But he says the case proves that construction companies need a guest-worker program."

Now after reading this I have to go back and see if I can find any kind of follow-up report on what really happened to the fence company. I'm almost afraid to find out. 😠

never understood how a fence is going to stop an immigrant of crossing the border. people are determined to come to the US(cubans will sail in a cooking pot if it gets them in florida). So how is a tiny fence going to stop them?

anyway, hiring illegal immigrants to build an anti illegal immigrant fence is freaking hilarious 🙂

The minutemen are steady at it. If the Gov. can't get it done than it is up to Americans to stand up and donate to these couragous men and women who are building the fence and gaurding to keep it safe.

I for one say CHEERS TO THE MINUTEMEN!!! Great Job!!!

Here is a link to some of thier progress, and some info to some that do not want this to happen, due to thier own criminal ideas.

Say you opposed the Berlin wall, are you supposed to oppose this fence?
I mean, just imagine, that you don't really see a difference between a Mexican and a US citizen as anything more important than the difference between a New Yorker and a Californian?

To me, building walls, fences, etc. is nothing more than a form of segregation. Or am I off on a pole here?

I don't think you can really compare the two. The Berlin wall was built by the Soviet controlled East Germany if memory serves me correctly, to keep East Germans from going to West Germany controlled by the French, British, and Americans. So really they built the wall to keep the people in and would not let them get to the other side.

The fence is mearly a deturant(sp), you may still come to the United States without any consequene. Except you must do it legally. We are not trying to keep Mexicans out, just the ones that will not report themselves and go through the due process.

I'd say it's more likely that you're off your rocker. Do you understand that it costs the American taxpayer $90 billion a year to take care of these Illegals?

You can believe what you want, but your international perspective leaves you weak in real world power and you cannot enforce what you believe in.

Nation-states are an acknowledgement of violence and strife. There are always people out to get anyone at some point. Nation-states concentrate the power of a lot of people to the point where those people can actually get really big things done - like kill a hostile despot who has a big army halfway across the planet.
