Why the Electoral College

When Alexander Hamilton first proposed the Electoral College as the means to elect the President of the United States he could not have been more correct.

Think about what just happened in the Trump election.

There are 3,141 counties in the United States. Trump won 3,084 of them. Clinton won 57.

There are 62 counties in New York State. Trump won 46 of them. Clinton won 16.

Clinton won the popular vote by approx. 1.5 million votes.

In the 5 counties that encompass NYC, (Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Richmond & Queens), Clinton received well over 2 million more votes than Trump. (Clinton only won 4 of these counties, Trump won Richmond)

Therefore these 5 counties alone, more than accounted for Clinton winning the popular vote of the entire country.

These 5 counties comprise 319 square miles. The United States is comprised of 3, 797,000 square miles.

When you have a country that encompasses almost 4 million square miles of territory, it would be ludicrous to even suggest that the vote of those that encompass a mere 319 square miles should dictate the outcome of a national election.

Thank you Alexander Hamilton and the Founding Fathers of America who gave us a Republic Based on Law and not a Democracy Based on Popular Vote!

Without the Electoral College Smaller States would be ignored in the American Election Process!

yes, ludicrous. because it's not the people who get to decide how a country should be run, it's the acres of farmlands.

in all the other countries that don't use this awesome system, the interests of plots of land are ignored and the humans oppress them.

Why do you think plots of dirt should determine who is leader of a human society?

Alexander Hamilton didn't propose the Electoral College BTW.

Nor is the "57 counties" claim accurate. http://bigstory.ap.org/article/fb5a5f7da21d460bbffb6985cb01cb2c/trending-story-clinton-won-just-57-counties-untrue

For the same reason I don't believe that corporations are people, I don't believe states have rights. People have rights. States are a convenience to people. To give them rights against people is pretty much Orwellian dystopia by definition.

The anti-democratic gimmicks of the right aren't going to work for much longer.

Very soon you and your ilk are going to wake up with a diversified America where progressive thinkers hold political power. There is little appeal for your ideology among the young or among the fastest growing segments of society.

You and the Daily Signal are doomed.

"The Electoral College ensures that the interests of “flyover country” in middle America cannot be ignored."

And it ensures that the interests of inner city people of color will be ignored.

In what universe is it appropriate to let a group of people concentrated in small urban areas determine the fate of the third largest country in the world by population? Do explain how that comes anywhere close to "democracy." Just come out and say it: You're in favor of small groups of people in small areas controlling the rest of us. Because that's what you're espousing. Record lows for voter turnout over the past 2 decades in this election, and you have the nerve to argue pure democracy here? Good luck.
