I don't know what the textbooks say, but I knew the US supplied Japan with most of the oil they needed. When the US cut off the oil shipments to Japan they said it was an act of war on their country. That is what caused them to bomb pearl harbor.

Yes. In particular the effect that our oil embargo had on motivating Pearl Harbor.
