Almost. It's actually spelt "Nationalsozialismus", so the first four letters would be "Nati". But they went by pronunciation rather than spelling; and it's also an analogy to the older term "Sozi" for socialists. It has negative connotations, so the Nazis themselves rarely used it.

In the common English Nazi is often used to refer to totalitarian authoritarianism.

It's origins were Hitler's form of National Socialism. Although much is made of the differences between Communism and Socialism, there really isn't that much. Both rely on the power of the State to compel citizens to put the interests of the State ahead of their personal advancement.

I think it's a very dangerous road to go down to downplay or ignore (as you have done) the master race element, racial theories, and the industrialized genocide that formed an integral part of Nazism. Mind you I understand where you are coming from. On this forum recently, you asserted that Obama and the Nazis were kindred spirits. This is of course either a deliberate hideous insult to the memory of the millions of victims of Nazism or it's incontravertible evidence that you are a misanthropic fool with no real understanding of Nazism and no tolerance whatsoever for any views that diverge from your own.

You ever say that to someone who compared Bush to a Nazi?

Yes, of course. It's ignorant, insulting hyperbole for exactly the same reason. And angry pontificating Zionists also do their share of stripping words of their meaning and cheapening the memory of those who suffered when they hurl the Nazi insult at people like Rabin, Peres, Arafat, Sadat etc.
