That's probably why they call you Jarheads.

I'm not sure where "jarhead" comes from. But yeah - Marines can call each other that, but someone outside of the Marines probably doesn't want to say that. It makes us cranky.

You may be right at that. 😉

I thought the red carnation was a symbol of socialism, or perhaps it was communism instead.

Heh. That is not the reason my grandmother didn't want another Marine in the family. It had more to do with her husband's military mentality in all things, and in particular his seeming assumption that he could run a family like he could a platoon. He even had "poop sheets" that choreographed every vacation down to the hour. It drove my grandmot ...[text shortened]... but you already know I'm lousy at taking orders of either the explicit or implicit variety.
"...rose petals..." On this site, for a pro-military thread? Do you think I was unaware that I'd be inviting anything other than scorn from 90% of the readers here?

C'mon.

I love roses. I love flowers. One of my favorite activities all year long is the spring plant with my wife. We've probably planted about 2,000 bulbs since we bought our house five years ago. I wish deer weren't so fond of tulips; they're my favorite of all.

Nah, I love deer. We've got a half dozen on our property about six months out of the year. Wild turkeys too, in season. I'm a nature guy, not a hunter.

Well, are you willing to entertain the notion that I wasn't inviting anyone to throw rose petals at my feet?

There was a war of the roses.
