The Hitler salute was the Roman salute - palm down. The American one was the Bellamy salute - palm up. However you're right; it was indeed changed due to this similarity.

edit: now i'm confused. Looks like the hand salute changes after the first few words of the pledge. I think it means the hand tilts up from it's previous flat position.

From there the arm is extended with palm up.
I remember taking the Pledge everyday when I was in school. It was how we started everyday.
For a child it's kind of confusing .. but you just "go along 2 get along."
We all did.
I don't remember a single time that anyone objected to taking the Pledge daily. As children, we had no idea what it meant, but we didn't question it either.
It was a different time, a different place.
I/we were indoctrinated into the concept that we (USA) were a great Country and we were "pledging" ourselves to the State.
I took another Pledge when I joined the Military .. same concept, different Pledge.
I'll always honor that Pledge .. but that's just me.
They still indoctrinate children in our Public school system .. they just pledge themselves to a different mantra nowadays.

In a way it's simular to the pressure put on children to covert or become part of a religion.
They get you really young and just download all these programs in your brain.
It's also normal for children to rebel against this type of thing if they are strong willed .. if they are able to listen to that little voice inside that gives the BS alert.
Back in my day we had these things we called parents and neighborhoods .. different time, different place.
Originally posted by jammerThe thing is, the only part I resented was the religious stuff that was added in the 50's. I've never had a problem declaring my allegience to the US of A.

Religion shouldn't be forced on anyone IMO .. the different religions should be taught at a higher level of education .. as an ellective.
The religion that children are indoctrinated into today in our school system doesn't even have a name .. it hinds behind intellectual BS.
It's the SP, PC, Cultural Marxism Critical Theory Religion .. you may think you haven't been indoctrinated .. I think you have.
You ARE a product of the Calif. School System .. right?

Who even knows what these words mean without having to think it over? Who could answer if you asked them? Certainly not the schoolchildren that are forced to say it.
