“The Dutch” became independent from the Holy Roman Empire in 1648 (or whenever the Munster agreement was) after fighting the Spanish for 80 years.
Basically the same country, just a different political entity.

Tell that to the Irish in 1850 when they could have helped them not starve when the potatoes went gnarlly. The brits were arrogant in the extreme. I saw that myself when I visited Dublin on a job interview, took a double decker bus just for the hell of it and there were brits on that bus making assses of themselves being arrogant and clearly thinking they were WAY superior to the native Irish. Just for disclosure, my granny on one side was McCart, my granny on the other side was Murphy, so maybe I could be called biased🙂
@mchill saidDon’t be so sure. Sure, the country won’t vanish from the map overnight if Trump wins in 2024. But the institutions of freedom and Rechtsstaat are fragile. Several civilized countries in Europe descended into tyranny surprisingly rapidly: Greece, Spain, Germany (twice), Italy, just since 1930 or so, less than a century. Don’t think it can’t happen to America.

Yeah, they just discovered a town in Europe some 8 THOUSAND years old of hunter gatherers which blew apart the idea farming begat towns. Then there was Göbekli Tepe clocking in at 12 thousand years old. They HAD to have had aliens coming down to help them built those T shaped stones, right, since they Had to be too stupid to have ever built those structures, just like the Pyramids, right?
