India’s rice export ban could send decade-high prices spiking even further
India has banned the exports of non-basmati white rice with immediate effect, the latest in the government’s effort to rein in high food prices.
India is the world’s leading rice exporter, accounting for more than 40% of the global rice trade.
In addition to a reduction in global rice supply, panic reactions and speculation on global rice markets would exacerbate the increase in prices.
This is in reaction to Russia:

Russia pulls out of Ukraine grain deal, in potential blow to global food supplies
Ukraine is the world's largest grain producer.
Russia also attacked Ukraine's Odessa ports (Ukraine's largest sea port) which it had promised not to attack only a few months ago.
India is concerned about possible impending food shortages so they are severely restricting the export of not only rice but sugar and other food items.
This is a serious blow to the global food market so soon after grain prices hiked because of Russia.
India has suffered catastrophic famines while British capitalists exported food, just as Ireland did but on a much larger scale. I don't blame them.
Russia's attacking grain transport ships too.
China banned dumpling eating contests for food conservation reasons as well.
Ukrainian grain tends to go to Egypt and China from what I remember.

That's a Mitch Hedberg joke, if you're wondering.

His actual joke is funnier.
