Originally posted by DrKFI had a message from him yesterday; he told me that his house is at a safe distance (30km) from the volcano, but that it has still been somewhat miserable with volcanic ash descending on their neighbourhood and the kids having to wear masks. Anyway, he's OK and not in direct physical danger, but I'm sure would appreciate his RHP friends and sparring partners keeping him in their thoughts.
As sh76 pointed out, we probably shouldn't expect to see him round here for a while anyway.
I haven't heard from him since before the quake struck, though.
Originally posted by TeinosukeI got a similar PM. Seems like everything is going to be okay; but it's quite scary to live through that sort of thing, I am sure.

Although we disagreed politically much of the time, I think FMF has been the single top Debates forum contributor for years. The forum already misses his presence badly; I think that's plain.

More likely he realises that he has been rumbled on the Debates forum and has run out of steam.
In the forty years to the mid-century mark, there were some 4,000 fatalities on the river due to boiler explosions. Some 500 vessels were wrecked by the peril. Early boilers were riveted of weak iron plate. Vessels at the time were not inspected, or insured. Passengers were on their own.
Originally posted by sh76Yes indeed. I generally found myself in sympathy with a lot of his opinions, but even when I wasn't, he was always entertaining and provocative.

How about calling for a vote on this after we have agreed the wording of the question?
