Iran sank and abandoned a dummy US aircraft carrier in the middle of the Strait of Hormuz 11 days ago. The wreck, which Iranian forces have left in the narrow stretch of water, now poses a risk to ships carrying billions of dollars of oil through it every week.
Can you imagine the disaster if that sunken ship moves due to
currents, and causes a collision with an oil tanker? Then the Strait is forever locked up.
Crazy stuff. But what can military intervention do at this point?
The cat is out of the bag, damage done.
@sonhouse
But the bottom line is our defenses are good enough to stop anything Iran can throw at us with the idea of actually destroying an aircraft carrier. Don't forget each AC has a cadre of ships protecting it before anything can actually get to it.
We can shoot down any kind of incoming missile MILES before it gets even close to an AC AND there would be dozens of jets launched to thwart such attempts also.
So good luck with Iran being able to actually destroy an AC. Some of the support vessels maybe but not the big kahuna.
@sonhouse
All of that may be true. I was really more worried about how the other big oil
ships will have to gingerly navigate thru the affected area forever, or until they
get that ship out of there.
It's very concerning because if something does happen, not only do you have an
ecological disaster, but you have yet a second ship clogging the shipping lane.
That's my concern
@earl-of-trumps saidYour biggest concern today ? 🤔

@Duchess64
The whole argument is moot since they don't need to put an aircraft carrier in such restricted waterways, they can do their military options from a couple of hundred miles away with no loss of efficiency.
@Earl-of-Trumps
It doesn't take the sinking of an AC to clog the gulf. a couple of destroyers would do the job just as easily.
@Duchess64
So you are getting out the popcorn just HOPING for a war between US and Iran.
And ready to start dancing in the street if we lose again like we did in Viet Nam.
Here is a weird thought: What if we actually have productive talks with Iran which might be the case if we vote our present nonPOTUS out of office and a sane person comes in instead?
I guess you would be disappointed that no shooting war happened.
@earl-of-trumps saidThat's the point. Iran is trying to use its position so close to a choke point to improve their negotiating position. Same thing Turkey does and Egypt has tried to to with the Suez. I'm sure Spain and maybe the Moors tried it at some point but the UK took Gibraltar so that didn't work. I'm sure it's been tried with Panama but the USA is too strong and too close for that to work. It's been done in southeast Asia too:

Denmark has probably exploited their position in the same way at some point in history.
@sonhouse saidThat is a bloody ridiculous assumption Sonhouse.

Calm down and stick to the debate.
@athousandyoung saidPrecisely.

What would anyone do in Iran's position?
