Ukrainians were not surrendering in the first week like Russia planned, Zelensky didn't flee the country like Russia planned.
Without US aid they would still have fought and died. This way it gives a clear message to Putin and psychos like him that if you invade other countries there will be consequences.

It was at least a decade away to even start negotiating, there would have been several veto votes, and the next Ukraine president could have been pro-Russia. And they could have nudged things along with minimal propaganda effort.
Putin wanted to flex his muscles (muscles we know now they don't have) and he thought the whole thing was going to be over in a week or two and the world would be faced with spilt milk.
