(No idea who pays for the local roads or the interstate highway system, though.)

I also seem to remember (although I wasn't there at the time) that the Catholics used to run free hospitals centuries ago -- what ever happened to that?

But I would agree that when it comes to something "free", somebody still has to pay for it, or there's some kind of catch or maybe cost of time and attention for those who take the bait.

Yeah, it's definitely quite a concern that NYC might become slightly more socialist in a beneficial way than that all three branches of our Federal government seem to be rather corrupt at the moment.
