Perhaps. Regardless, there are a lot of things on the dollar bill that people might disagree with if they learned its meaning. I have yet to hear anyone complain about the great seal and the quote of "novus ordo seclorum", nor the pagan premise behind its symbol. Personally, I highly suspect this is due to a vast number of people understanding that it is rather irrelevant and/or not understanding the meaning at all. If the quote of "In God we trust" were written in a dead language, I highly suspect vastly fewer people would be taking issue with it, being that they couldn't be bothered to discern its meaning.

I must confess, it does frustrate me a bit when I hear people object the the reference to God, as they usually have no idea whatsover when I ask them how they feel about the other symbols and quotes upon the bill. Seems a bit like tunnel vision if you ask me. Anyway, if anyone doesn't know the meaning of the REST of the dollar bill, I highly suggest researching it. Personally, I found it fascinating. Regretably, I have no sources at the moment to point you to, but if I find one I'll post it.

I think it really doesn't matter WHAT we put on the currency, someone will complain about it and it will be offensive to group of people. If we had symbols and connotation from Sylvan or the evolutionary fish and "In Darwin we trust" written upon it, people would still complain because it would offend their fine sensibilities. Even if we were to step outside of the theological box, this premise would prevail. Find me a symbol, and I'll find you a cynic. In the end, it's only as relevant as the self imposed importance it has to an indiviual.

If you are going to mention the other things on the dollar bill that people would object to if they knew what it meant would it not be better to use Annuit Cœptis (He has favored our undertakings) rather than novus ordo seclorum (A new order of the ages)?

If you have to be a certain age to use it why did they teach it to us (against our will I might add) at school?
I dunno. 'Novus ordo seclorum' is a good one though, especially if you've read Neal Stephenson's 'Cryptonomicon'.

No Xanthos, the Latin Police are not going to arrest you. People who use latin in an effort to sound intelligent and worldy are punished enough when they leave the room and everyone talks about what an insufferable poser they are.

I DO NOT BELIEVE IT.

A form of religion wishes to ban chess and I draw the comparison to Dungeons and dragons being condemned by religion and no one has an opion about the matter?

Condola the lot of you!

What if the discussion is about Latin phrases, as XanthosNZ's is?

How many languages do you speak, Dodger11?

Sighhhhhh.....like arguing with a six year old. Had your original reply been FACETIOUS, my response would have been inappropriate, but since it WAS sarcastic, I think I was right on the button. Maybe you should throw in some more latin to impress everyone.

Actually, you have yet to make any arguments in any posts on any forums I have seen.

To clarify what I mean by this, how do you define 'argument'?

Uh that would be a bad thing to ask. I'll have to admit I speak but one language.
I know a few Latin phrases, I can ask where the trainstation is in German and sing a song about a hat, I can say window in French and chicken in Spanish. That's it.

I'm a failure.

Oh, I only speak one language properly, and one badly. I'm just wondering why Dodger11 has no respect for those who try to use as broad a communicational palette as possible.
