Israeli lawmaker defends alleged rape of Hamas prisoner as far-right protesters rage over IDF troops' detention
Ultra-right-wing Israeli nationalists stormed two military facilities late Monday, protesting the detention and questioning of nine Israel Defense Forces reservists suspected of raping and abusing a Palestinian prisoner whose injuries were so bad he had to be hospitalized.
A member of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's Likud party, speaking Monday at a meeting of lawmakers, justified the rape and abuse of Palestinian prisoners, shouting angrily at colleagues questioning the alleged behavior that anything was legitimate to do to "terrorists" in custody.
Lawmaker Hanoch Milwidsky was asked as he defended the alleged abuse whether it was legitimate, "to insert a stick into a person's rectum?"
"Yes!" he shouted in reply to his fellow parliamentarian. "If he is a Nukhba [Hamas militant], everything is legitimate to do! Everything!"
Right-wing Israelis stormed a military prison and attacked cops in defense of people accused of a serious crime. Sounds eerily familiar..
Typically I only discuss the Israeli government when it comes to racist brutality of Palestinians. But it's clear there is a shocking amount of right-wing Israeli citizens who not only condone vile human rights violations but encourage it.
Israel's government is frequently and rightly criticized for their racism and war crimes but not enough focus is on the alarmingly widespread culture festering in Israel.
Don't get me wrong: many thousands of Israelis protested in the streets multiple times against the war and called for Netanyahu's removal. I'm grateful for them. But the reality is that the most openly far-right government in Israel's history had enough support from the people to gain power.
I think this culture will only get worse.

I should also point out that not one of the thousands of protestors who stormed the prison and attacked the guards were arrested.
Not a single arrest for breaking into a miliary base and attacking officers to defend rapists.

So far petitions have been made by member states to the ICJ and there is no arrest warrant issued for Netanyahu. So its not a matter of escaping prosecution.
