He's a working Class Hero. He's a Man, He's America!

This song by Tommy Roe summed up the beginning of the Conservative media machine.

As the Viet Nam war wound down in the 70's, and American military limped home, defeated and demoralized, inflation, unemployment, and sky high interest rates gripped the economy, American's were looking for someone to blame. Conservative media figures, such as Paul Harvey, William F Buckley, and later Rush Limbaugh were only too happy to supply them with one. It started softly at first, homespun tales of American values, wholesome ideals, and a strong work ethic slowly morphed into single message: Sitting in traffic to and from work, white men listened to their car radios telling them that "working class white men were the backbone of America, and they alone were carrying the load for all those lazy, welfare sucking slobs, too lazy to do a day's work." Family values, Christian faith, and rugged individualism were being eroded by those just too lazy to to go out and get a real job. Month after month, year after year, decade after decade, they listened, until it all became so real for them. Ronald Reagan was elected primarily on the promise that he would "crack down on welfare queens!" Result: The rich got far richer, many in the middle class became the working poor, and those advocates for a living wage, and a few crumbs of health and dental care were all labeled socialists. The foundation had been built, and by the time the internet age dawned, no one was going to tell them anything they didn't want to hear. Never mind the fact that there were just as many Conservatives on public assistance as Liberals, or that red states consumed more federal dollars than blue states, or that corporate welfare outpaced social welfare by 2 to 1. Nope! They didn't know, and they didn't WANT to know.

No one was going to tell them anything they didn't want to hear - -

I read it!! OK, I follow you about the truth that came from the Rush's of the world. That the hard workers were carrying the load, etc,,,all true.
But I lose you at 'they listened until it all came so real to them." By 'they', I presume you mean the people who work, and were listening to the radio about stories of real life, our society, etc?
Here is the problem. You say, #1, that the rich get even richer as they work. Is that not logical? What are you saying? And you say it, as if it is wrong, or heresy, or greed, or whatever y'all's words are for those people who work and make money. Sounds like Suzianne.
#2, you say many in the working class became the working poor. I don't know why you say people in the working class became poor.......One can be in the working class, and not be poor. You indeed insult those in the working class. Frankly, they want to be there or they would find a job to develop themselves. Or, they can choose to not work, to be what I call losers. Parasites. This goes without discussion. What are you talking about?
#3. You bring up the Forum-worn subject of living wage and free health and dental. Well, it is well documented that socialism does provide these freebies......and yet you say 'labeled socialists'. But, Isn't that what they are, as that is their actual cause,.. their mantra? What are you talking about?
I did not get the gist of the rest of your post, but the above was enough. Help me Rhonda.

The Foundation (the truth as referenced above) had indeed been built.

And of course you gloss right over his point: "No one was going to tell them anything they didn't want to hear - -" Too true.

Barely. Didn't Adam Hills do a version? IIRC, that's the only version of that song that ever hit home for me. Lennon, after 1966 or so, always made me cringe no matter what he sang.

You say, #1, that the rich get even richer as they work.

Wrong - I said the rich got richer - period. Many of these trust fund babies, did little or nothing in terms of work. In addition, those in the upper 1% got much richer as a result of doing no additional work whatsoever. You're completely off base here skippy.

By 'they', I presume you mean the people who work, and were listening to the radio about stories of real life, our society,

Wrong - This had nothing to do with "real life" It had to do with lies about who was working and who was not.

You say many in the working class became the working poor. I don't know why you say people in the working class became poor.

OK, I'll explain it to you. The right wing's attacks on organized labor, and other advocates for a fair wage were, as well as millions of good paying jobs being offshored drove the working class's buying power down significantly. - Got it now?

You bring up the Forum-worn subject of living wage and free health and dental.

Wrong - I brought up the subject of fair wages and affordable healthcare. Your selective distortion of my words, was done solely so you could insert the term Socialism into the mix.

Your single minded obsession with right wing politics won't even allow you to copy my text correctly. This is pathetic.

You said the rich got richer. C'mon. Explain this. What else do productive people do? They work today, make money, and then, they work tomorrow. More money. Tell us how you make that process different.
Tell us what you would do about people who inherit the assets of their father. In reality they already own it. You will have Bernie just seize it? What WOULD you do? These are fair questions. And just who are you to judge whether the 'did nothing' for the money. You gonna investigate them?

Your thingy about the right attacking labor unions>. Do you think people should have 'Right to Work' or be sub\ject to dicatatorial unions? We try to defend workers from unions, taking their dues money. Call it what you will. Right to Work= Freedom. Yeah, I know there is that word again. Don't you just hate it. You what the unions to be free, to do their thing. We don't.

You are wrong that I brought up the subject of 'living wage'....you say you said "Fair Ages and Affordable Health care. You indeed did not. You actually said "...advocates for a living wage and...a few crumbs of health and dental care". So, chalk one up for me. And for record, of COURSE I interject socialism, as that is their goal,,,,,,,,minimum wage and free health care. Socialism, Socialism, Socialism........
No distortion from me. McHill. Chalk me up again.
Now, can you answer my questions up above, after you eat a little crow?

Dear Joe - I could make this simpler for you, but I'd need puppets and crayons.

Don't worry about it. Go back to your little world, where the big, bad liberals never work, only want free stuff, support open borders, and hate America; back to that place where everything is real - simple. 🙂

But wait…..my questions…..How bout just the first one. You disparage a person who is rich, implying that this is a bad thing. How so,and how to make his activities (?) fit in with your society.
We can do this…..

If productive people got rich, then there would be millions of very rich street layers, house builders, nurses and sewage workers.

Yet, the very rich always seem to be the people with land or money who they, themselves, don’t actually produce anything worthwhile.

Why should a bank manager be richer than someone who repairs sinks and toilets?

One of the two is truly productive. The other is a parasite.

Because the bank manager....managing...is being paid for his smarts, his experiences, his ability to make everyone rich. High paid CEO's would be Musk $563M, Tim Cook $133M. The companies require someone at the helm. Like a ship captain. The captain is paid more than anyone else on the ship. Libs would like to tell him how much he should be allowed to make. Not much incentive for the CEO, though. Anyway, it is nobody's business.
If you and your investors start a widget factory, you will have to hire a guy to orchestrate it. He may run it from his bed. But he is REAL important. You might google the concept.

I am surprised that you say the amount of money one makes should be based on how much he toils, If I have a cotton field and sit on the porch watching employees pick cotton, drinking a lemonade, should the people working in the field make more money than I do??
Have you been talking to Suzianne!???

Ah, so a plumber is NOT being paid for HIS smarts. Got it.
Your prejudice is showing.

If someone is rich, you would LOVE to be his friend.

"SCREW the plumber, I paid him WAY too much to fix my broken pipes".
