He was an established actor before WW2,then went on to serve as an Army Air Corps pilot in the European theater, receiving two Distinguished Flying Crosses. He stayed in the Air Force reserves and achieved the rank of Brigadier General. During the Vietnam War he quietly, with NO fanfare, flew in the instructor pilot position on a B-52 that went on a bombing run over Vietnam and almost didn't make it back because of an inflight emergency.. He insisted that the public never knew about it and didn't let the studios use it for publicity, Few know about it today.
He was a helluva guy.
How many people in his position at the time (major Hollywood star and a General in the US military) would stick their neck out like that and demand that news of it never be released?

Possibly the last Texian to die in battle was Jacob Walker, who attempted to hide behind Susannah Dickinson and was bayoneted in front of the women.
