John Oliver: Australia's Gun Laws

Debates

John Oliver's piece regarding the aftermath of gun restrictions passed by conservative politicians in Australia:

For those who won't watch: 0 mass shootings since the gun laws were passed in 1996, as well as a significant drop in homicides. These laws were passed by conservative politicians against the wishes of their own base.

I wish American conservatives had the balls those guys did.

Australia marks 25 years since worst mass shooting

Within two weeks of the massacre, the then conservative prime minister John Howard had brokered a National Firearms Agreement law limiting licensing and ownership controls of guns.

Australia banned all semi-automatic rifles and all semi-automatic and pump-action shotguns and thousands of unlicensed firearms were surrendered under a gun amnesty.

"We took hundreds of thousands of guns out of the community and the evidence since ... is that there have been no mass shootings since then"

The video highlights how the conservatives in Australia were making the exact same arguments against gun legislation that they're making now: "taking away our freedom", "we'll be less safe", etc. Fast forward, no Australian feels "less free" or "less safe" because of the gun bans.

Fortunately we also don't have an NRA lobbying both sides of government, we don't have a second amendment that promotes the need for a well regulated militia and unless you live on a farm where you need a rifle to control pests that spoil your crops, why would you need a gun?

Maybe its about having a cohesive society where the gap between rich and poor is not insurmountable. Maybe we're just lucky that we have bipartisan support for social welfare policies that provide citizens with a safety net against poverty? Maybe by taking away hunger and providing free healthcare and a decent free education to enable real world change for citizens who've hit rock bottom, maybe the incentive for violent crime with loaded guns, simply disappears? I can't say for certain, but it would certainly seem so...

Right, the guy with thousands of dollars worth of guns was some kind of robin hood revolutionary shooting up poor folk to redestribute their wealth.

BTW, there's no such thing as free education or free healthcare. Goobermint stinks up the word 'free'. Genuine benevolence is dissuaded and destroyed by goobermint programs.

"But... but... gun control doesn't work!"

It takes a village. Unfortunately, in your village you are absolutely okay with the local dominant alpha male corralling everyone into his business enterprise so that he can live like a chief while everyone else subsists on canned fish and stale white bread.

That's because during the last few years Australia has allowed a lot of people in from you-know-where.

Let me guess... the USA?

'Cause, what with the deeply racist Australian immigration laws, it certainly isn't going to be Africa, or Southern Asia. Those all get dumped on some poor Pacific islands and left to rot.

No.
For the past ten years Australia has had an ever increasing number of immigrants from non-white non-Christian countries.
Much to their detriment as a society.

No.

Look at what I actually wrote. Australia actively refuses that kind of immigrant, and puts them into concentration camps.

Imagine how much higher homicides would be without the gun bans.

Ahh but that canned fish and stale white bread taste like freedom to wajoma. Goobermints get in the way of modern day slavery and sexual exploitation too, fascists the lot of them.
The goobermint should lock them up, no hang on.
