Debates

It seems to me that the favorite subjects in this "Debates" column are evolution, gay marriages and abortion. (Sport and politics are generally in the, well, General Forum.)

What interests me is whether there is anybody here who would acknowledge that he/she has changed his/her opinion as a result of anybody posting something that he/she did not originally agree with.

I have certainly changed some opinions as a result of increased understanding coming from input from other people. I won't go so far as to say that I have undergone any major changes specifically due to postings on the RHP forums, but I've only been here a few months, after all. 🙂

Best Regards,
Paul

How much concern do American's have when allowing for the possibility that the balance of power is going to shift over the next 50 years whilst America continues to be perceived as an aggressor with suspect motives ?

This is a question about how the world will be when America no longer enjoys its current level of control and the world is short of diplomacy and full of weapons.

By diplomacy I mean a past and present where fair and peaceful outcomes have been negotiated.

Here's just one example why people need to consider the longer term consequences of their country's actions (beyond one politician's time in power) and why it is necessary for a major overhaul of foreign policy.

Those for suicide bombing in defence of Islam

Indonesia 27%
Pakistan 33%
Jordon 43%
Nigeria 47%
Lebanon 73%

This is just one example. However, this example also shows that there's more to be done than eliminating small fanatical groups.

... and, at this turning point, which presidential candidate is better for the longer term viability of the world ?

Christ, STANG, what is your problem? Do you carry around printed copies of this post to hand out on the street? You already have a thread (or three) devoted to this question, wo why do you repost it in threads that are unrelated? Have you bee diagnosed with OCD, or are you really such a jackass?

Yeah...so you obviously haven't changed your mind on subjects then?

Maybe STANG is a "performance artist", who knows?
I have seen other views in these forums which have caused me to question some of my views, sure, it's a good thing to have internet forums. (I know you didn't ask that specifically, I thought it was implicit in your question)

Thank you, short and sweet.

Also thanks prn and Rabella.

Fact is, I love debating. I would sometimes take an opposing point of view just for the hell of it!

However, I have to confess to a slight disillusionment with some RHP debates, some of which are due to the medium: anybody sitting on the sidelines who may not be really interested can come in with red herrings and flippant (often disruptive) remarks.

Also, it does sometimes add value to know more about whom you are talking to. I appreciate and value, for example, bbarr and chancremechanic's profile: it helps to know you are talking to a philosophy major or a Coast Guard officer.

Why so many members refuse to reveal any personal details - and even disguise their location - is beyond me. What do they have to hide?? 😛😕😠

So, I admit my question was a little tongue in cheek. Convincing someone else isn't the only (or even the main) purpose of debating. Sharing information and opinions is. But when a debate is merely a restatement of entrenched opinions, we are playing ping-pong.

In peace,

CJ
